Label groups

A label or music group is comprised of record labels, subsidiary labels, or distributed labels that are organized under the same company. These groups are formed either voluntarily or through acquisition as a way of streamlining label activities such as distribution, promotions, and manufacturing. There are three types of label groups listed below.

Major label groups


Generally, each label group is comprised of label group divisions that break down further into, i. Wholly-Owned Labels, ii. Subsidiary Labels, iii. Distributed Labels, iv. Joint Ventures and Dual Imprints, and v. Vanity Imprints and Sub-Labels. Since 2004, the major label groups are referred to as "The Big Four." Between 1998 and 2004, prior to the joint merger of Sony Music and Bertelsmann Music Groups in 2004, the Major Label Groups were referred to as "The Big Five." Prior to the acquisition of Polygram by the Universal Music Group in 1998, the major label groups were referred to as "The Big Six."



Present music groups


These label groups are formed either voluntarily or through acquisition as a way of streamlining label activities such as distribution, promotions, or manufacturing.



Former music groups


These label groups have since dissolved or have been acquired and reorganized by other major label groups or present label groups.
