Biography

Tokuma Japan originated from the Minoruphone record company founded by the Taihei Group in the 1960s. Minoruphone was acquired by Tokuma Shoten in 1972 and subsequently changed its name to Tokuma Musical Industries. After a decade, the company was divided into two divisions: a production department named Tokuma Japan Corporation formed following the purchase of Japan Record and a sales department named Tokuma Communications Co., Ltd. In 1992, the two were merged together and the company was given the name Tokuma Japan Communications.

Tokuma Japan Communications is owned by Daiichi Kosho Co., Ltd. (株式会社第一興商), who bought the company in 2001 along with Nippon Crown. As a result, Tokuma and Nippon Crown have a close relationship, having formed a distribution company named First Distribution (now known as Crown Tokuma) in 2002.
