It followed Sony Music Entertainment and was formed in August 2004 as a joint venture between entertainment conglomerates Sony Corporation of America and Bertelsmann. The 50/50 partnership merged both companies' record labels and music companies under one umbrella. As part of the deal, Bertelsmann retained its music publishing business and both companies act independent of one another in Japan. Following a 2006 appeal by an Independent Music Label Association, Sony-BMG's merger was allowed to proceed within the European Union. Sony-BMG Music Entertainment was followed again by Sony Music Entertainment in 2008 when Sony completed its acquisition of Bertelsmann's 50% stake in the companies' joint venture.
