Profile

Name: Gravações Elétricas S.A.
AKAs: GEL
Start Date: 1943
Close Date: 1993

In 1943, Byington & Cia lost the representation of Columbia Records due to Columbia's lack of interest in continuing its operations in Brazil. As Byington already had a strong brand at the time, the company decided to form Gravações Elétricas S.A. and its subsidiary label Discos Continental. Gravações Elétricas S.A. was mainly based in São Paulo, but they moved their factory to Rio de Janeiro in 1963 after purchasing Tapecar Gravações S.A. Over time, the company formed the Gravasom, MusiColor, and Phonodisc labels. Discos Chantecler was acquired in 1978.

Gravações Elétricas S.A. left the record label business in 1993 when it was purchased by Warner Music International. The Discos Chantecler and Discos Continental labels continued for a few more years under Warner Music Brasil. The other remnants of Gravações Elétricas S.A. became part of Gravadora Atração Fonográfica Ltda..
