Adding collaboration artists

A collaboration should only be entered as a group if there is a good reason for doing so. Some of those reasons include, but are not limited to the following:

Absolute (no consensus needed)
  • The collaboration has three or more albums of original, officially-released material, OR has thirty full songs/compositions worth of original, officially-released material under the named collaboration.

Stronger (consensus needed, in the form of a message board poll on the Site Policy board)
  • The collaboration has multiple official releases that span multiple years.

  • There is proof that the collaboration has invested in the marketing and/or branding of their collaboration (designed logos, marketing material, etc).

Weaker (consensus needed, in the form of a message board poll on the Site Policy board)
  • The collaboration has an interesting history, and the submitter is willing to add a biography which describes that history.

  • The collaboration toured together for an extended period of time.

  • The collaboration falls into a strange edge case that isn't covered by this policy, but there is a clear argument that it should be filed as a collaboration anyway.

If the collaboration doesn't have any of the aspects mentioned above, then it should not be entered as a group. Instead, the individual artists should be credited in the File under section of the discography, and the Credited name field can used to format the name correctly if necessary.

How to add collaboration artists

The method for determining collaboration artists depends on whether or not there are multiple collaborations which should be handled similarly or not.

If the collaboration to be added is one of a group of related collaborations which should probably be handled similarly (such as a major artist with multiple collaborations with similar names/situations), then a proposal for the entire set of collaborations should be posted to the site policy board, along with a vote, and consensus must be reached before continuing.

If the collaboration to be added is not related to a group of cases, then the collaboration should be added as an artist profile, and the voting should determine whether or not the collaboration should be added (the voters should vote yes for the "absolute" cases, and vote their opinion for the "stronger/weaker" cases).

Crediting artists with collaborations

When a collaboration entry has its own artist page, all of the associated releases should be credited to both the collaboration with a "credited" filed-under entry, and to the individual collaborators with an "uncredited" filed under entry.

This does not apply to artists which have names that look like collaborations, but are actually bands, such as Simon & Garfunkel. If there are releases in the database which are filed as a band despite being collaborations, and you want to change the filing, then you must submit a proposal for the general set of changes in the site policy board with a poll, and reach a consensus.

Deleting collaboration artists

If you want to delete a collaboration artist from the database and change the individual releases to be filed under the individual artists instead, the procedure for doing so depends on the situation.

If the collaboration artist has only one album (and a total of less than fifteen songs) worth of original material, then it can be submitted (and auto-approved if applicable).

If the collaboration artist has more than one album or fifteen or more songs worth of original material, then you must submit a thread to the Site Policy board with a poll, and come to a consensus before taking action.
