Classical releases on RYM

Before you begin

It is important that you should familiarize yourself with the different components that make up a properly entered classical music release on RYM, and how they work together.

  • Classical work
A written composition of classical music. Works are added to RYM through the composer's artist page. For more information, see the Add a work page.

  • Composition credits
Credits related to the composition of music (such as composer, lyricist, arranger, songwriter) are applied to the work, never directly to a release.

  • Performance credits
Credits related to the performance of the work (such as conductors, orchestras, and soloists) are applied to the release and/or the tracks on that release.

  • Track listing
On a classical release, the individual tracks are linked to their corresponding works. That means that instead of entering the title of the work in the tracklisting, you enter the shortcut of the work being performed.

Ensure the works are in the database.

Before adding a classical release, you should ensure that all of the works that appear on the release are part of the RYM works database.

You can find the work in one of two ways:

  1. Searching "artists" for the composer

  2. Searching "classical works" for the work name.

Note: When searching classical works, you can include the name of the composer to narrow the search.

Verify that all of the works (and associated movements of that work) that are on the release you want to add are present in the database. If any works are missing, then you must first add them to the database. See the page Add a work for instructions on adding works.

Adding the release

To add a release, go to the release addition page.

Release category

Under Release category, choose "Classical music release (in full or part)".

File under

In the File under section, enter the main performers that appear on this release. For most classical releases, there will be a conductor, orchestra and often a soloist. The release should be filed under all of these performers. See the Credited name section below for more info on checking the "credited name" boxes.

Note: Do not enter composers in the File under section for a release unless the composer also performed on the release!

Release type

Follow the standards for Release types.

Title

Enter the title as it appears on the release. Make sure to separate the actual title from the credited composers and/or performers, exclude such names if they stand apart from the rest of the title.

Example
In the title "The Chopin Collection (Artur Rubenstein)", the performer stands apart from the title. Therefore, you should enter only "The Chopin Collection" as the title.

However, in the title "Horowitz Intepreta Chopin", the performer is part of the grammatical structure of the title, and thus the entire title should be entered as printed.

Artist name

The following criteria should be used:

  • If there is only one performer on the release, or if only one artist is featured prominently on the cover or spine, then the Credited name checkbox in the Filed under section of the release page should be checked for that artist.

  • If multiple performers are featured prominently on the spine or cover, and the names are separated by a "/", then the Credited name checkbox in the Filed under section should be checked for those artists.

  • If multiple performers are featured prominently, and the names are written in another manner, then the name should be entered in the Credited artist name section. If the name begins with an article or a person's first name, put that in the First name field, and the rest in the Last name field.

  • If no performer is listed prominently on the release, then enter the conductor, orchestra, and soloists in the Filed under (omitting any that don't apply to the release, of course), and check the Credited name checkbox for all of them.

Credited composers

Look at the cover and/or spine. If the composers of the work are credited in a certain manner or order, then use this field to customize the way the composers will be displayed. If you leave this empty, then RYM will automatically determine how to display the composers.

Track listing

The track listing is one of the most vital fields when entering classical releases, as this is what will link the release to the works that are being performed on it, which in turn will link the release to the composer(s) of those works. You must link each track to the relevant work that is being performed on that track.

To link works to track listings, click the "Insert link to artist or work" button. A search window will appear. Click the "work" button, then search for the work in question. If you're searching for a movement of a larger work, then first search for the larger work, then click "select movement". Remember that you can type the composer's name as part of a work to help narrow down the search in cases where the work you're looking for has a generic name.

Click on the appropriate work, and the link will be entered automatically into the track listing.

  • If multiple works appear on a single track
Enter a work shortcut for each work that appears on the track.

  • If a work appears differently on the track listing than how it is displayed on the works page
Customize the link - that is, change it from [WorkXXX] to [WorkXXXX,Name of work as printed]. See track 3 in the above screenshot for an example, and Shortcuts.

  • If a work spans multiple tracks
Make the work link a header. Put it on its own line, in bold, and do not enter a track number. Then list the tracks under the work.

Note: Classical works often contain movements, which are works themselves. Even if tracks correspond perfectly to movements within a work, the main work itself should still be listed in the track listing as a header.

Credits

In the credits, enter all of the performers on this release, along with the roles they performed, and if relevant, the tracks on which they appear (after you've entered the tracks).

Note: do not enter composers in release credits unless they also performed on the release! Composer credits are automatically derived from the works that are present on the release.
