Fallout 4

Fallout 4 fails in creating a compelling experience where one can truly customize immerse themselves in their character with its voiced protagonist with a preset personality that taints the roleplaying aspect throughout the storyline. However, it also offers THE most immersive, immaculate wasteland to explore in the franchise, densely packed with locations and dungeons that have their very own personality and design.

The combat and survival mode are also ages beyond its predecessors, and the new crafting system was seamlessly implemented and feels like a deserving core component of future Fallout installments (let's just hope there will be no more unbalanced, rounded retrofuturistic eldritch aberrations as weapons like in here).

Also highly worth noting is the insane scope of mods available in Nexus Community. Please buy a PC version of this game so you can mod it. Fallout 4 is essentially a blank canvas of which you can heavily mod to tailor to your preferences. You can make it like Doom, a relentless and intense shooter, like Left 4 Dead, dealing with endless hordes of weak enemies, like a survival simulator inspired by the Metro series (literally - you can overhaul the Commonwealth to be covered in ice with humans dwelling only on the subways), or my favorite, like a ruthless tactical shooter/survival simulator akin to DayZ.

Overall, what it lacks in character customization and meaningful decisions, it offers in its exploration-focused action/adventure aspect and insane variety of styles you can morph the game into. Once you put that in perspective, you slowly realise Fallout 4 is just a bad Fallout roleplaying experience, but by no means a bad game.

An extremely anemic game using the Fallout name and iconography but completely failing to carry the torch of the franchise. The writing is godawful, the RPG systems supremely lacking, the gunplay feels weak but somewhat improved in feeling from Fallout 3 (expect damage sponge enemies regardless). Try it out for Bethesda-core exploration, stay away otherwise.

When I got to the end of this game I had absolutely no emotional catharsis. I don't know what happened the entire game or what I just played and I was never pulled in enough to even care. I played on PS4, I played back when the game was within a year of launch, and I never played a Fallout game prior to playing so maybe that's all a recipe for disaster already. I tried the building, I listened to the dialogue, and I experimented with the combat. I was not satisfied by any of it.

I was apprehensive when the game came out because every part of it in previews stunk to high heaven that it wasn't going to aim to be anything more than Another Bethesda Slopgame with the Fallout branding, but...

can you imagine how funny it is to have this whole "you can name your character something and your robot buddy will refer to you by name" gimmick explicitly refuse to call you by your name?

Anyway I can't possibly dredge up enough anguish about the game that others haven't said in much longer paragraphed hate-bomb reviews anyway.

Funny anecdote: I stole this on day 1 via piracy sites because duh who pays Bethesda for the monkey shit they put out if you have a gaming PC?

I launched it, black screen. Couldn't get it to run. I looked at the release on Steam and said, you know what, Todd? I think I've stolen from the piggy bank enough times. You can have this one.

The black screen issue persisted onto a legally downloaded and installed version of the game. It was a lack of compatible drivers causing the trouble. No refunds were allowed.

The campaign is not as fun as New Vegas. Fallout 4 is best played with mods.
