In the sequel to it's 2008 release of Fallout 3, Bethesda makes combat a whole lot better, and everything else much, much worse. Story and dialogue takes a back seat to a Minecraft-style gathering, crafting and building system that was put in. No longer will you be hunting for better weaponry, now you won't be wasting your time picking up useless laser rifles and missile launchers. Those just take up room in your backpack reserved for all the duct tape, wonderglue and circuitry you'll need to craft into scopes, receivers, suppressors, stocks, barrels and cup holders for the few guns you'll use now. Unfortunately, Bethesda decided to ignore all the innovations made by the previous Fallout title (like being able to craft and reload your own ammunition), so the weapons upgrade system is actually a step backwards in the end.
The story is godawful, your character is already has a pre-made backstory and characterization, every faction you join sucks. This game is just a massive write-in by Bethesda. The only good thing is it's still a Bethesda game, so you're guaranteed at least a few dozen hours of mildly entertaining shooting and looting. However, this game is such a massive step down in quality that all future Bethesda releases should be ignored. Any genuine improvement in depth of story/gameplay is impossible now with every title by the developer being more and more dumbed down yet selling more and more. This game might not be the straw that broke the camels back but it comes from a tradition of making shallower RPG experiences that was apparent with Fallout 3 in 2008 and does it's part to worsen the series. Avoid unless you're desperate to walk around and mindlessly kill things then vacuum up virtual garbage.
DLC 1 (Robot stuff): Shoot robots, build robots, shoot bandits wearing robots, fight the boss behind the robots. DLC 2 (Settlement stuff): I could care less. DLC 3 (Not Point Lookout): Same shit as the main game but with more fog and Moby Dick stuff. DLC 4 (Nuka-world): Didn't play but at this point who cares?)

This game has the most poorly executed story I have ever seen in an RPG and no amount of mods will change that (unless you play frost and remove it), but at that point just play stalker.
My naive hope is that while BGS are trying to salvage Starfield and develop ETS6 at the same time and Todd Howard is distracted with the Indy game someone quietly put Obsidian on Fallout 5/West Coast and inXile on Fallout 1 and 2 remakes
This series deserves better than being consigned to decent-at-best Fallout-themed looter shooters
I wouldn't even mind if a hypothetical Obsidian Fallout game went hog wild on the looter shooter concept and implemented psychotic Path of Exile levels of itemization. I mean, the turbonerds over at RPG Codex would be mad but fuck em lol
this game is garbage and the only redeeming factor is that the open world is fun to explore and the gunplay is an improvement to Fallout 3 and New Vegas (although New Vegas general combat is still better). Probably the worst story I have ever played in a video game to be honest.
New Vegas is my favourite game ever, and I get why long-time fans don't care for Bethesda's take on the series, but man I feel like taken on their own terms, F3 and 4 are both also really excellent games. The character progression, crafting and exploration in this are just so goddamn fun.
