Action roguelike

Genre
Action roguelikes (or action roguelites) are games from the roguelike lineage with perma deaths and procedurally-generated levels but drop the turn-based grid movement and RPG elements. These are replaced with action gameplay elements with dexterity now being a key element of success. These games will usually feature meta-progression where new items, characters or permanent stats upgrades are unlocked for future runs by achieving certain goals, making each subsequent run easier and allowing the player to progress further.

The genre came to popularity with the releases of The Binding of Isaac and Spelunky which created a big boom within the indie game community spawning hundreds of similar games over the course of the next decade. Some of the other most popular titles are Enter the Gungeon, Dead Cells and Hades. This style is far more popular than the original traditional roguelike games, so it's pretty common for gamers and gaming media to just call them roguelike instead of roguelite.

In the 2020s with the success of Vampire Survivors, a new sub-genre of action roguelikes emerged bullet heaven featuring top-down view, shooting mechanics and requires to survive hordes of enemies.
