Risk of Rain is an action platformer in which the player controls one of several different characters fighting their way through alien worlds. It provides support for local as well as online co-op and features procedural content.
I never really got to play this co-op, so a lot of the classes just felt pretty bad, but for whats here even in solo play its incredibly tight and overall enjoyable even if some of the challenges the game throws at you seem a bit too obnoxious or difficult for me to really adore it.

One of the best rogue-lites I've played in a while
Risk of Rain is one of those games that doesn't look like much at first. It's a 2D side-scrolling rogue-lite that prides itself on being super hard. Great, we've seen those before. And I'm not trying to make it something that it isn't, so if you're turned off by any of these keywords, you're likely not going to have a good time.
With that out of the way, I have to admit that I absolutely fell in love with this game for a while. Its mechanics feel satisfying and skill-based despite the obvious RNG of a rogue-lite type game. You're always running against the clock as the game gets progressively harder the further you are into a run, so time management is a big factor here that you just have to get a feel for. Do I stay in this area for a few minutes to grind for some gold to make my run easier, or am I already healthy enough to take on the teleporter event and move on?
The game is balanced decently, with enough variety in realms and enemies to keep you on your toes just enough. Though some realms are definitely harder than others. I have beaten the game a few times, but I've never made it past the Magma Barracks for example. There is also a Logbook that provides some really pretty artwork and diary-type entries on every enemy you encounter once you picked it up from a dead foe. This doesn't add anything to the gameplay, but it's definitely a nice touch in a game that otherwise falls pretty short on worldbuilding.
The artifacts that you can find on hidden spots around the maps and, after you found them, activate them in future runs for run modifiers such as extra damage for less health or free choice of items, keep the game fresh even beyond the normal gameplay loop. And the difficulties provide a great learning curve for newer players. Drizzle is okay to get you familiarized with the game, while Rainstorm and Monsoon provide enough of a challenge even for mechanically gifted players, of which I am not one. The different characters also provide a wildly different experience, even though some like the Enforcer or Acrid, are wildly underpowered - or at least harder to make work - than others. That said, most of them are still fun to play even though I'd definitely recommend going with the Huntress if all you're looking for is to get as far as possible.
I can't attest to how good the coop feels in this game due to none of my friends being interested in any kind of rogue-lites whatsoever. Though I do imagine that it'd be a blast to play with friends, if you have any that are interested.
The soundtrack is also stellar, for what it's worth. I usually listen to my own music while playing singleplayer games, but this game made me not want do that for pretty much the first time in my life. One thing that is a bit of a disappointment
Overall, I'd say it's definitely worth the ten bucks it costs on Steam/GOG. If you see it on sale for less than that, it should be a no-brainer, even if you're just looking for a fun distraction between other games. The graphics are timeless - and by that I mean they are so outdated that it really doesn't matter - the gameplay is, in typical rogue-lite fashion, the perfect mixture between misery and fun.

I believe currently Remakes/remasters/whatever only are separate if its entirely new code or something, so i dont think this counts. Regardless, this game is gonna get so much more love with returns, so fantastic, all the secrets are so fun and the art is beyond lively.
Definitely not the case since Yakuza Ishin (Kiwami) is a from the ground up remake in an entirely different engine (therefore new code) yet it doesn't get its own page. Theres no consistency or logic behind these decisions.
yeah, I def want to get to that soon. I had some choice words before the original thread got locked, but I've been a bit busy with other matters lately
It really feels like part of the confusion from the mod perspective is that this game kinda looks like how you remember the original ROR looking, hence why they think it's nothing but a remaster. But when you compare it to actual footage slash playing the original, you immediately realize how much better looking this is, as well as how different it plays. Granted, if a complete remake like Super Mario RPG can't even get its own page, then I guess this game has no hope in hell to get one too, sadly.
I was leaning toward remaster, but part of me is now leaning toward remake. If there was a "remix" option, I'd probably go with that, lol.
this is just like when they made the literal from the ground up remake of yakzua ishin just part of the same page
