Put a good 20 hours in 06/22. Some of the best writing I’ve encountered in a game. Somewhat reminiscent of Sunless Sea/Sunless Sky. Got kind of burned out actually *playing* the game though, and the central mystery isn’t all that compelling (although the world is).

Put about ten hours into this spring of 2022. Really liked the intricately designed world but hated the combat (even on easy it was laborious). Couldn’t finish. Didn’t help that enemies respawned after every load screen, which impaired fluid exploration.

Played around 04/2022. Soulslike with not-great art design or writing but a really amazing battle system focused on precise directional parries. Loved the gameplay.

Played and finished with 100% completion 06/2022. Really fun fast-paced shooter puzzle-platformer. The writing is seriously insufferable though. Like nearly game ruining.

Played 04/2022, about 96% completion. Really dug the design (Fromsoft but Spanish Inquisition motifs), the pixel art, the music, and the challenging gameplay. Hit the Metroidvania spot. Also cool Spanish language voice acting. Writing got a little samey after a while though…

Played 03/2022 right after Elden Ring. Pretty awful. Clearly the budget was spent on mo-cap and nothing else. Combat felt choppy and without impact, levels felt like…levels. Like from a late 90s game. All blocky and bland. Very little in the way of design. Good opening sequence and that’s about it. Took about 20 hours to complete. Regrettable.

I think I played this when I lived on Ferry Street, so late 2018? Totally luxurious design, but it gets a little boring to play. Would almost rather someone else play it, and just soak in the ambience.

Played 02/2022. Holy shit, so bad. Great art design and that's it. Uses table-top aesthetics superficially, but is really just an extremely lazy, extremely easy trad-JRPG.

Played 02/2022. I mean, it's an interesting idea: combine the punishment of Dark Souls with 90s JRPG gameplay + extremely minimal design. But... the gameplay was so fucking boring... After my first wipe (maybe 3-4 hours in), and seeing the colossal amount of busywork it would have taken to get my party back together, I quit.

Played around November/December 2021. Starts out pretty good but gets crazy repetitive. Just way too much mindless content. Probably put in about 50 hours, but had to tap out. Pretty good battle system though, but bulky.

Played April/May 2020. Honestly a great send-up to the series, with its own deviations that comment on nostalgia and expectation.

Replayed the remaster all the way through 11/2021.. Without the fast-forward feature, not sure I would have completed this. Pretty basic stuff, but kind of moving as a very self-aware farewell to this particular era of Final Fantasy.

Played for about 20 hours in 10/2021. Same half-assed shit they always do. Fun sandbox for a while but repetitive busy-work and a badly written main narrative kill this thing. Also, plagued by micro-transactions.

100% completed 10/2021. Not very good.

Played/completed October 2021. Honestly really impressive production design, liked the combat/difficulty, and the voice acting/mo-cap performances were really good. Really immersive. But by the end, something about the scope felt off. Ended up feeling very small. Like a pilot episode that’s waiting to expand. The valkyries were fun but the other end-game stuff felt way too grind-y.

Played 09/21. Really couldn’t get into it. The rhythmic elements are totally over-emphasized as you really just have to keep a 4/4 tempo. The tempo just forces you to act quickly, to solve spatial puzzles, kind of like Tetris. Anyway, robust features but I found it unenjoyably difficult.

Played sometime around the turn of 2020/2021. Scratched my Bindings of Isaac itch. Pretty decent.

Played 09/21 on Switch. Nice, but minor, and ultimately forgettable. Like a side-scrolling walking-simulator. I do like the art but it wasn’t much fun to play.

Finished 09/28/21. The writing is pretty atrocious and the characters are all bland, and the direction doesn’t seem to indicate any awareness of this, since it really tries to land a melodramatic punch by the end that just doesn’t work at all. But the gameplay itself is pretty solid, some great creature design, felt like the middle difficulty was well-balanced (constantly having to use my entire arsenal as I was frequently out of ammo with one gun or another). Dug the three open hub-levels (which a lot of people seen to complain about). Not scary in the least, though.

Gameplay and level-design are kind of atrocious, but the ending is transcendent.

Really solid follow-up that manages to replicate the writing of the original pretty smartly, and even improves and complicates the gameplay (to some degree).

Absolutely formative. I've probably replayed this more than any other game.

Played and completed 09/2021. Lot of fun puzzles, and the score sets it apart. Was able to scratch my Witness fix. Slightly. Doesn't really strike a tone (save the score) separate from Portal, however (even aping it in the writing for no reason). Paper-thin plot. Smart optional collectibles.
