Title
The original BioShock was a milestone in gaming. The world of Rapture, a utopia submerged in the Atlantic Ocean turned dystopia by the 1960s, was one of the most unique settings to explore in a video game, and it was complimented with a memorable story that was filled with a scathing, hilarious take on Ayn Rand’s objectivism. Furthermore, the narrative was one that could only be told through the medium of games.

After hearing news of a sequel being built without the original creator, Ken Levine, and his team, many fans hoped that it would in the very least keep the original’s tone. Bioshock 2 might not reinvent the wheel, but it functions as a welcome continuation of the original.

It’s hard to compliment the game too much since the four developers behind this sequel played it safe. The world, gameplay, and graphics all feel like an untouched expansion rather than a vast refinement or reimagining one expects after sequels like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Mass Effect 2. The story has a couple moments that will excite fans, but overall it’s considerably weaker. On the contrary, the gameplay feels more intuitive and fun but at the cost of losing some of the creepy atmosphere that defined the original.

A lot of the effort behind the game was put into its multiplayer component which is surprisingly deep and builds on the Bioshock ethos. Unlike the original, this isn’t a game that everyone must play but for fans (you shouldn’t start with this one) it will be seen as a faithful, even if weaker, sequel to a classic.

É bom, mas sofre na comparação com o primeiro. Daquelas sequências que, se encurtadas, poderiam ser uma DLC.

Title
This improves on everything I disliked about the first game. Combat and hacking is smoother. The characters are better integrated into the game world and don't just feel like avatars of the interesting people in the chat logs. The textures are much more pretty. The difficulty balance is superb.

The introduction of Lamb as a villain fleshes out the world of Rapture significantly. Before Fontaine, Rapture had been going through something of a civil war between Ryan and the psychologist Lamb he had hired to help raise the morale of depressed citizens living beneath the surface. It turns out she had her own plans and starts mobilizing citizens against Ryan. After Ryan's death she takes control of Rapture. Their feud explores aspects of individualism vs. collectivism and it is told really well. The political satire of the first game is given new dimensions as Ryan struggles with coming to terms with Lamb's appeal. I found both to be sympathetic villains, especially Lamb, but I think there is another dimension here some people miss, and it is that Delta and Eleanor exist outside of these binaries and it is not so much about who is right, but rather, what compels people to do the things the do from within their standpoint and perspective. Each character has their thoughts and personal struggle in regards to what Ryan and Lamb bring to them, whether it is Grace Holloway, Father Simon Wales, or Stanley Poole. Delta and Eleanor are biologically compelled to be with one another, damn everything else, and it is this which ultimately upsets everything for Lamb. The significance of all this isn't clear to me but the story is rich for analysis.

Another thing I like here is that is the game moves into the world of big daddies and little sisters. These were mysterious entities in the first game and we get to see the world from their perspective. I don't want to spoil it, but my favourite part of the game is towards the end when you take control of a little sister which I found to be some of the most effective horror I have ever encountered in a video game. The weirdness of the big daddy and little sister bond is such a fascinating part of the first two Bioshock games. As their purpose in Rapture's schemes are gradually uncovered, we learn a tragic tale.

There are some minor flaws I could bring up but the game hooked me from beginning and never let go.

Title
I remember loving the first Bioshock back when I was a Junior in high school, I bought the game during my Winter break and it was one of the best games I thought. Then a little over a year later this game came out, and I remember being pretty disappointed. I just didn't like playing as a big daddy, it felt weird and having the stupid mask lines around your face. On top of that the story wasn't that good, where the first game, while it did have holes and flaws, had a pretty good story, this on the other hand is about some side character who randomly has influence when in the first game there was not as much as a mention of her, and of course the villains and side characters you are with just aren't interesting at all. I mean you would think with all the influence and power Lamb had she'd at least have some mention in the first Bioshock, but instead the developers just sort of cram and force her into this universe and make up excuses for her character and how she wasn't mentioned in the first game. The second is that the areas or design just wasn't as memorable or good, there weren't any moments like Fort Frolic or Arcadia in this game. The game tried to explore the poor parts of rapture and the slums, but in a way that almost made no sense, why would rapture have poor people when the society only let in the brightest and elites, why would this area of the game even exist.

On top of all that maybe the story kind of sucks, the characters are uninteresting, and the design is a bit bland and generic, but what about the gameplay. Well it essentially plays like Bioshock 1.5, controls are very similar, you have similar plasmids, big daddies are replaced by big sisters, who aren't as powerful or intimidating as big daddies, you have things still like hacking and security cameras, and of course the old 1940s and 50s music. I mean if theres one thing I can praise about this game is it did keep a creepy atmosphere and I did enjoy some of the new enemies added to the game, and the music in the game was good, but I just found the game mostly boring and the story to be a big downgrade from the first, the only character I actually found interesting in this was Gilbert Alexander. I mean I can go on, why are people still around in Rapture in 1968 which is 8 years after the events of the original Bioshock, how the hell are these people eating and still surviving in complete chaos and anarchy, where did Tenenbaum go, no Sander Cohen? Theres just so much potential this game had and being the sequel to what I find what of the most atmospheric and best games of its time, this felt like a big step down, and I was still in high school at the time, and even then I was able to see this game wasn't that good. Yeah its not a bad game in terms of gameplay and even has a few occasional fun moments like the amusement park, but the story, characters, and design all just made this game lackluster, and I even gave the online a shot and played that for a few months, and it was nothing special.

Shockingly average
I love the first Bioshock, and i loved the deeply flawed Bioshock Infinite as well. However, by the time i got to this one, i think i already was aware of way too many flaws of the series while the novelty being nowhere as effective. Its the exact same setting as the first game, except with a much less gripping story. The atmosphere is nowhere as compelling this time around, since we have already been on this stage. The story is pretty lame.

What bothers me the most about it is the combat, which i could swear was worst than the first game. Guns have little recoil, and enemies dont react to them. It feels extremely weak as shooter, and as its something that you will be spending a lot of the game doing its a really big problem. The game is also way more grindy than the first one, it feels that there are much more little sisters to save, and escort quests are never fun.

Im being a bit too harsh on it, because i loved the first one and Infinite and its DLC's so much, not to mention System Shock 2. Its still a solid game by its own right, just a deeply disappointing one.

As soon as I saw the rating for this I immediately went to check the rating for Infinite and thank god its around the same, slightly lower even. This is a fucking great adventure shooter. It plays well, you get a great variety in weapons and ammunition and you feel like a badass. Rapture is also right up there among the all time great settings. Infinite should have been its own thing, if it ain't rapture it ain't bioshock.

Remember being irritated of Lamb when I played this at launch. While I’m still about as much a fool as I was in 2010, Lamb’s grown on me a lot this run. She’s a fascinating contrast to Ryan and his ideology. I still think the monologing gets old after a while but w/ how measured and calculating Lamb is throughout it’s a welcome improvement over Fontaine screaming “LOOK AROUND YAH, KID” every five minutes.

The gameplay is a lot more dynamic than in the first game, I was actually using a lot more plasmids than just sticking with one or two like in the first game and the new mechanics were cool too.

However, the game as a whole just didn't grab me like the first. Story is better in the first, but even ignoring that, the game just felt a bit flat. Maybe cos it's just more of the same because I felt the same about Minerva's Den (and the story fr that was pretty good), but yeah it just didn't click for me. Still decent though.

Not really a fan of the guarding little sister sections at all and there's so many of them. The hacking is much improved, however. Maybe if I returned to the first BioShock upon playing the 2nd game it'd be less appealing, but first time playing it was enthralling as hell

This is a fantastic game. It's one of those games I play through every 2 or 3 years just for the fun of it. It still feels tight and punchy, and though it lacks the lustre of the original which at the time felt fresh and new, it's rock solid and just as good. In my opinion there is no dud levels, whereas the big daddy section in the first game felt a little flat.

This game never got its fair dues because it wasn't a Levine title, but returning to it in the years after Infinite has shown there was something solid here. It almost feels like a dying art, this game feels like it could have been made in the sixth generation of consoles, it feels like something you wouldn't really even see in the current industry climate. It's just a fun action adventure FPS that further fleshes out the intriguing world introduced by the first game, none of the pretentions of Infinite.
