Title
When first saw the concept for superliminal I was immediately hooked. The idea was so simple yet so fresh and intriguing. That said you'll find very quickly that there really wasn't a ton the developers could think of to flesh out these concepts.

This game is certainly ambitious. I loved the ability to change the environment by using the portals or changing 2d paintings on the wall into objects. But the issue is that all these concepts feel like one trick ponies. There's not much depth to each idea and it leads to the puzzles feeling very repetitive.

A major part of making games like these is the team's ability to deny the expectations of the audience. You constantly want to be thinking of ideas that catch your audience off guard. It's what makes games like Portal or The Stanley Parable so incredible. Because not only do they actively expand upon their basic concepts but they also challenge the player to think outside the box as well.

An element that this game sorely lacks, however, if there's one thing that can save superliminal, it's the art direction and world design.

This game is the equivalent of visual eye candy, every world is so bright and vibrant. And the game loves to play with your mind by constantly playing visual tricks that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Even if the puzzles or the writing of this game don't meet your expectations, at least stick it out for the end, it's one of the most visually stunning pieces of work I've ever seen in a game.

Liminal Space for improvement
It was fun and charming enough for the first little while, despite the GarageBand-tier musical instrument sounds used at times. I even have an innate bias in favor of any game that's physics and puzzle -driven, and/or meant to be a meditation on the concept of perspective. Still...

The thing that convinced me to quit and refund the game was the sudden drastic tone shift of the Blackout/Horror section AND a not immediately clear 'puzzle' in that area, somewhat similar to the now-infamous East-West Exit Sign puzzle from later in the game-- walking across a gap by seeking the silhouette of the walkway over the gap . How was I s'posed to know that was there? How was I supposed to know what to be looking for? Another mechanic tossed in and tossed out willy nilly? Hmph.

Anyway, the game lacks focus and wastes most of its potential. More objects in the world should be scale-able--too often it becomes a 'hidden object hunt' for the scale-able item, not much of a puzzle. There should be more actual puzzles, with more varied solutions. I do appreciate the nods/homage/pastiche of Eternal Sunshine and whatnot, but ultimately sticking so closely to the aesthetic, tone, and typeface of The Stanley Parable almost seems like a marketing gimmick designed to trick people into thinking it's from the same creators.... Go play that game instead, first, honestly. Then Portal 1 and 2, then The Witness.

Perception is NOT reality
A game clearly inspired by Portal and Stanley Parable, Superliminal is weird in its own way. In the game, you have to travel through your own dreams and solve puzzles related to the perspective and perception of objects. The experience is quite unusual and funny, in a video game I have never seen this before. At the same time, puzzles are not perceived as somehow boring and dull, because something here is served in a comedic manner, each puzzle here is unique in its own way, there is no increasing difficulty as it is usually done. Each sleep level (there are about 6 of them) completely changes the interactions with objects and surprises you, it keeps a good pace, although in fact the game itself is a walking simulator. Because the game is very short (it will take about 3 hours to complete), each puzzle is hand-directed, it's very cool. The game clearly motivates you to think outside the box and expresses this in every moment. There are no specific drawbacks to the game, a couple of puzzles will make you suffer a little, and at some moments you think that you are just stuck and nothing happens until you understand what's what, but basically all puzzles are very easy. For a better workout of the mind, the game has a challenge mode, where there is a limit on jumps and the number of taking objects. I advise the game as a rest and an easy, fresh, in some moments even relaxing experience from modern video games, in which you usually do your routine.

Great game. Absolutely enjoyed the novel concept and mechanics, but I wish they expanded upon them a lot more. The game is way too short at around 2 hours. But I also wonder if the novelty of this mechanic is a limiting factor and if would be easy to quickly exhaust puzzles that can be made with this.

I tend to disagree with those saying this was too short. Nearing the end, I was dreading how far the developers were dragging the experience along. They could've at least done more with the puzzle mechanics, but I do give it a slightly higher score for its imagery. The story being drivel doesn't help things, though, more of that Inception-style nonsense about dream layers and dreams within dreams which, as far as I'm aware, aren't actually things that happen and not what lucid dreaming actually is. As far as I know, there's only one R.E.M. state (in which most dream-related shenanigans happen) and four other sleep states (related to the deepness of your sleep, not dreams) and that's it. I'm all up for weird fiction about dreams, but this and anything else Inception-inspired just doesn't work.

This is kinda a nuts take to me.... People have observed appearing to have dreams within dreams, it's a perfectly fine thing to base a work of fiction on. I can't see anyone being misled about the actual science based on this or anything like it.
    • Awesomov 2021-12-28 11:04:00.557717+00
Because it's really either one of two things:

      1. People technically going in and out of the R.E.M. state multiple times during sleep and thus technically dreaming multiple times during sleep even if they don't know or remember. This is normal and happens all the time, it'd actually be strange if it didn't occur.

      2. Lucid dreaming is merely having awareness that you are dreaming, which I don't doubt exists, it has been observed. There is also the sensation of a false awakening, which is when someone is dreaming vividly enough to feel they're awake when they're really sleeping. People confuse both of these as dreams within dreams, but they're just experiencing different sensations within the same dream state because that otherwise also pretty much implies that people go into the same biological process again while they're already in the process of it.
    • RawheatC 2022-01-08 16:21:46.816216+00
I checked out some scenes from The Cell (I know, not as good as watching the whole film), and I can see the similarities between dream visuals and its style. What I meant by wondering if it was even possible to emulate dream sensations was that outside of the general sensation and experience of dreaming shared by us all, dreams can have aspects unique to them that are very bizarre and fantastical. I don't even know what is possible in the realm of dreaming as I have experienced very outright bizarre things and with that in mind, one could come up with something abstract and call it a dream state.

Thank you so much for clarifying this, I hate videogames with things which don't happen in real life.

Fun, maybe too easy on the puzzles, but the narrative was pretty lame. The last part was so pretty, yet the stupid self help book material narration ruined it for me.
