20 Minutes Till Dawn

Takes so long to get to the challenging stuff, and doesn’t have good enemy variety to justify how long runs are. Another mind numbing clicker.

Absolute Drift
2015
I normally hate driving games, but thanks to the top down camera and focus on slick controls with a passable scoring system, I ended getting really invested and spent a good amount of time grinding for top leaderboard spots.
Unfortunately, many of the levels weren't worth doing since the best way to get a max score was just holding a drift angle in the same spot of the map for 2-3 minutes straight, which isn't very interesting. The main track stages helped fix this, but the time to hold a combo was very generous and caused many of the top replays to look less smooth since they could just grind points forever since time didn't play any part in your score.
Its still just a fun game to play, but that last change that needed to be made to scoring makes it unappealing to truly master.

Had three great areas and a cool twist in the resource management relating to your sight, but the majority of the other levels aren’t great, and the story isn’t interesting. It’s a little better at the end, but you’ll only want to revisit the game for the stand out levels.

A magical experience when you don’t know anything going in, but by halfway point you’ll start to realize all you’re doing is getting materials and digging straight down to get all the planets cores. Still nice on that first playthrough, but you’ll probably never play it again once you see the credits.

A nice and weird adventure that lacks challenge and is mostly just about picking shit up. I love how unique most of your tools are compared to other games, but they don’t have much depth to master so they lose their luster by the end of your first playthrough. The story is alright, but it’s just the weirdness of the world that keeps you going.

Baba Is You
2019
Probably my favorite part of Baba is You is how many puzzles can be broken in what seem like unintended solutions. Even when a lot of them aren't, you kind of have to marvel at the foresight of the designers to be able to account for all of your devious ideas. Maybe this won't be true several years down the line when there are more games like it, but the unique premise really does make sure you know how you got a solution rather than just doing trial and error to get by. It does mean this will be much harder than most puzzle games, but the point is that YOU solved it, so in my eyes this is a slam dunk in puzzle gaming.

Improved a lot of the original’s appeal, but unfortunately still lacks much challenge. It is way more fun to move around, and the bosses are even better (except for missing something scary like Killer Croc or Scarecrow), but those basic fights still drag.

Only reason this isn't getting a higher score is because the camera and auto-locking aren't very consistent, especially on the highest difficulty when there are way more enemies and harder encounters. Other than that, this is one of the most well-thought out action games ever.

Insanely cool premise and very well executed. About the only complaint I have is that the blinking segments that move you forward don’t start instantly. Biggest issue that I imagine others have is that the blinking tech isn't 100% consistent. Other than that, no complaints.

Blasphemous
2019
While the surface level appeal is obvious thanks to the wonderful art direction and basic action RPG gameplay, I would say the best part of blasphemous is its great pacing of the main games story and difficulty. It doesn't waste your time with mandatory drawn out sections because it trusts that you'll just want to spend time in its world just because it looks great and feels nice to move around in.
The main problem is that there isn't much to enjoy after that first run. Most encounters, while brief, are quite samey, and only really differ in the boss fights that test you on different parts of your tool kit. Backtracking is also not engaging since new challenges aren't added, meaning that most of the appeal comes from the lifted estus resource management of your health bar. It’s good for what it is, but it’s not unique and distracts from the great aspects of its world and characters.

2023
An unfortunately shallow and boring game. Feels like one of the more generic Metroid style games out there.
Most of the combat boils down to shallow reaction tests thanks to the parry, the weapons have very little interesting about them to utilize in traversal or combat, enemies don’t require much thought to deal with thanks to generic behavior, and most collectibles/abilities feel like they would have just been better off as innate parts of the Penitent One. Most of what you pick up is also very incremental upgrades rather than any significant addition.
About the only enjoyable part of the game is the strange world and nice music, but if you’re fine with a more relaxed pace game, this might be a good fit. Just don’t expect to be blown away by anything or to feel much while playing.

Blazing Beaks
2019
A cool idea with a nice push and pull feeling of power, but it’s not very challenging and most of the enemies and levels are boring. A lot of bosses also have a lot of waiting between attacks where they are invincible, so it feels tedious to do any more runs after your first win.

Bloodborne
2015
I would say the most enjoyable way to play the game is to pretend you can't warp until it’s absolutely necessary, or you reach a dead end. It may seem tedious, but being able to teleport freely in such an otherwise grounded environment pulls you out of the experience really hard and makes it feel more like a game, and less a world you are experiencing fall to ruin first-hand. It might have been necessary due to technical limitations of the PS4 considering how poorly the game runs on it as is, but it’s still a big disappointment in an otherwise amazingly constructed world and horror vibe.
Fights are often quite repetitive as well, but what keeps them somewhat interesting are the areas leading up to them which are usually unique, especially once the moon rises. The story behind the bosses is the true selling point, along with some of the best orchestral music you’ll ever hear.

Can of Wormholes
2023
Was pleasantly surprised by this sort of 2.5d puzzler. If doesn’t waste your time getting into some challenging stuff, and the extra puzzles that you do with the rooms themselves were really neat. Although I didnt use it much, the hint system gives too much of the surprise away on the puzzles, which sucks cause there are some really cool mechanics that are only used for like 2-3 puzzles and you move on to another cool idea.
Seriously, if you try this game, don’t use the hints! You will ruin a lot of the game for yourself.
Another unfortunate part of this game is how underwhelming World 8 is. It’s technically a victory lap for all the mechanics, but almost none of the puzzles use them together in interesting ways, making it more trial and error or too easy, rather than really testing your knowledge. It had a great build-up, but tragically bland ending compared to what came before.

CARRION
2020
A pretty cool premise which is twisted on its head around the halfway point which is nice. I also love how it doesn’t rely on a minimap since it means that every room has to be distinct in some way so it was easy to navigate. The biggest problems are the lack of threats, an unfortunate amount of backtracking, and with little to no way of mastering what you can do with the beast. After the first 30 minutes, you’ve already learned all you can about your move set, and the unlocks don’t do much if anything to help that issue.
Still very satisfying game feel with the tendril movement, but not much to enjoy past the surface level appeal and great map design.

A great action platformer, the fairness of encounters isn’t as tight as it needs to be thanks to the ability to just endlessly use continues rather than being kicked back to the start of the game. That sounds like it’d be a bad thing, but if you are making a game where you have to restart from the beginning every time, you have to make sure it’s fair so as not to frustrate players in a bad way. As it is now, this game doesn’t have much reason to replay it thanks to some unfortunate random elements and poor attack telegraphs.
