On Makin Island in August 1942, Private Miller witnesses the torture and execution of his squad of Marines by Japanese forces, before he is rescued by another squad, led by Corporal Roebuck and Sergeant Sullivan.
I think this might be a bit biased, but I love this game.
this game has 3 modes, with Campaign you get an about 8Hour long Story in which you play as Americans against the Japanese, and the other side the Russians against the Germans. U get Nazi Zombies with 4 iconic Maps (3 of them being DLC) and The Multiplayer which is about as dead as it can get, you can still occasionally find lobbies but the Multiplayer isn't that great on here either way so I guess it's fine.
the Campaign shows the horrors of WW2 so well, with its Different characters that are so memorable that one of them was reused for Black ops. Reznov is a Nationalist who does everything for his comrades, country, and revenge against Germany, Chernov is more of a moral person, that sees their doing more as murder than war, The connections between these characters are so good. The American story tries to do something similar but doesn't get it, as much as the Russian does.
The campaign is also Filled with iconic unforgettable missions like Black Cats, vendetta, or downfall. But the whole campaign is filled with great mission after great mission, the best being the Russian side.
The guns and gunplay are alright in this game, u have guns like PPSH or Thompson which are perfect and just feel so good to shoot, but also guns like M1A1 Carbine , Gewehr 43 and M1 Carbine, where I think like why do we need 3 times the same weapon, same with the Kar, Springfield and Arisaka.
The Zombie mode is the biggest thing imo, I'm biased but it's still so good every map is a classic has its right to exist and is atmospheric, hard, and buggy. And yes I love this. Nacht der Untoten is the start of all zombies but still has held up to this day, yeah it's slow but has a badass atmosphere and a great layout, and it's simple, good, and who could forget the Ray gun? Verrückt has the horror part, it's hard and spooky and bugged as hell, but still fun, bringing the PPSH (the best weapon in all COD) into the box, and perks. Shi No Numa has the swamp feeling that is more open and generous, bringing the DG-2 and the FLogger into play just great But also Hellhounds :O. And Der Riese the second-most-loved zombie map of all time after Kino. It also introduces Pack a Punch. every map introduces something new and exciting to find and the maps still have Easter eggs.
the multiplayer isn't good in this game imo.
I would recommend playing this game on Regular, as Veteran is super hard and unfair, you have Grenades raining down like water, and Infinite Enemy spawns, it's very hard, I played it one time on Ps3, took me like 30Hours to complete and it destroyed me.
This game is in my heart a masterpiece it does so much right and little wrong it's just too good.
This is my most played Cod campaign I played it like 5-6 times since I was a kid btw.

one of the best cod games for sure. ESPECIALLY SINCE IT HAS COOP! fuck yeah. this is just a blast to play through, pretty much loved every minute of it. the cutscenes are actually awesome and gripping, the graphics look really pretty and atmospheric, the enemy AI is awesome and fucking insane, charging you with swords and shit, dodging your bullets, running from cover to cover...the coop scoring system is really fun and makes you be competitive with your bud for even more stuff to do. the weapons all feel awesome and are varied, bolt actions, machine guns, shotguns etc..the GORE is SICK you can blow off legs and they crawl around crying for mum and shit...yeah this game is badass actually
campaign is kind of over before it began, but theres 2 missions that aren't available in coop, one is an awful turret section on a boat, and one is a really immersive and atmospheric sniper mission where you follow reznov around sniping for him...super memorable mission, maybe one of the best of the whole franchise. really fun game!!
7.5/10

World at War is an anomaly in the Call of Duty series, in the sense that i found the campaign more compelling than the multiplayer.
The campaign is WW2 in the pacific campaign. Its falls under every COD cliche, but the relatively untouched setting and polished gameplay helps it a lot. Its way more gorey than the past titles, and that helps making the gunplay more impactful. The enemy AI can be quite annoying, mostly because of the way that they tend to spam grenades. Still, its probably the best WW2 campaign i have played, beating the older Medal of Honors and Broters in Arms.
The multiplayer is more slow paced due to the nature of the weapons, but unfortunatly after having played Modern Warfare, it felt like a stepback.
This was the first Call of Duty that introduced the zombie coop mode, and i actually found it more enjoyable than the competitive multiplayer on this one. Its just really enticing to try to survive as long as you can against never ending hordes of zombies. The matches can get really intense towards the end, and i found that they manage to make the zombies feel dangerous even in the early levels. The gunplay fits this mode really well. Its more of a diversion than a main event though, as i dont think its nearly as replayable or deep as something like Left 4 dead or Killing Floor.

The campaign is rough and not worth playing but the multiplayer is excellent. The increased movement speed and perks that CoD4 brought to the table pair nicely with the slower weapons of WWII. It hit a sweet spot and is my favorite multiplayer in the series, CoD2 aside. The maps are also well done. It's a shame that WWII won't come back in favor with the series because the slow weapons that require you to aim balance out the manic pace -- spray-and-pray and one-shot shotties are less of a problem in this installment and it's all the better for it.

many of the maps in this game have stayed with me into adulthood. i think about airfield, castle, cliffside, dome, asylum, and seelow every now and then. some of the best map layouts from any call of duty game.
