Reliable
News that the makers of Fallout: New Vegas were going to make an FPS RPG set in space was going to do nothing but set high expectations. Since the last couple installments of the Fallout franchise, Obsidian Entertainment has been everyone's mythical hero: the people who took a good thing and made it incredible, and who should've been handed the reins. I have one foot in the pro-Obsidian boat (I actually liked Fallout 4 and fail to see what the big issue is, but whatever), so I was among those with high expectations for The Outer Worlds. I'll head this off by saying that those expectations were, for the most part, met.

I wanted a robust RPG system, and I got one. I wanted an interesting world, and I got one. I wanted fun FPS combat, and I got it. I wanted engaging characters, and I got them. The thing is, I just didn't get enough.

The scale of the game was almost shockingly small, with only a handful of decently-sized maps that are just sort-of handed to you in a pseudo on-the-rails format. I never once felt like I could just pick a direction and go see what was out there. And the world itself had just enough intrigue written into it that I wanted to see what everything was about, but unlike the likes of Fallout 3 and Skyrim, I never wanted that deeper dive. My eyes glazed over when presented with a pane of flavor-text. The well didn't seem very deep.

One of the scratches this game itched was the Mass Effect itch, with the variegated cast of companion characters. There was a lot of potential for me to get just as attached to all these people as I got by the end of Mass Effect 1 (let alone the trilogy), but by the end the only character I felt endeared to was Parvati—and I think that's because her companion quest arc kind of required attention throughout the bulk of the main story, whereas everyone else's companion quests could be completed in one quick sitting.

Speaking of the itches the game scratched, there seemed to be a lot of influences playing in here. Good influences too. The Fallout/Elder Scrolls itch needs no mention, and I've already brought up Mass Effect, but some of the combat and the more confined maps felt very BioShocky. Setting and (the excellent) music made me want to dig out my Firefly DVDs.

There are a lot of good pieces to The Outer Worlds, and I believe they're all in the right place and in the right order—but there's just not enough. Like, literally do everything the same, only do more of it. Go deeper. Flesh this out, expand that. I mean, for exclamations within audible range, I feel like the skill tree was built for a game that didn't force you to end it around level 30.

I don't think this is a failure by any means. I enjoyed it, and I'll very likely play it again, but it'll give me the same feeling I had for those really fun demos that used to come with PC games back in the day. Really fun to replay, but god damn I wish there was more.

Update: After reading something about the game, I grew curious. Turns out I overlooked how The Outer Worlds managed to make dialog skills, of all things, a viable main build. I played through again, this time focusing on all things Dialog and Leadership, and it opens up a completely different FPS/RPG game than the standard get-good-at-guns-shoot-bad-guys routine. If you didn't hate the game but also didn't dive into this mode, give it a shot. It's fun.

I also realized that I thoroughly enjoyed the game in my replays, almost as much as the first time. It's not exactly a selling point that one has to play a game multiple times to see its true quality, but it's true here. Half-star bump on second pass.

As close as this to an 8/10, there are just too many cracks in the seams of an otherwise very good Western RPG. Character creation is very robust, and options to respec mid-game or take on flaws for more perks add a lot of dimension over the course of its somewhat short but generally well-paced adventure. But while the setting is suitably dire and the wry dialogue and the ironically chipper art direction help balance out a more helpless sci-fi story, even a couple of truly gut-punching moments can't save a story without the real weight of a New Vegas, whose player influences on the environment are still unmatched by the time the credits roll. Indeed, the ending of Outer Worlds feels very sudden, slapdash and anti-climactic, even with the major story revelations at the end-game. It just feels like they wanted to include some of the major themes and beats from the likes of FO:NV, KOTOR and even Jade Empire, but didn't quite have the time or money to see it through.

Combine it with the usual bugbears of this kind of game, like combat being okay at best, stealth being underdeveloped and the looting curve hitting a definitive wall not far into the game, and you have a mostly pleasant but rarely remarkable WRPG.

In the 2020s, we need to craft an international arms treaty to prevent the further proliferation of first-person RPGs with preachy plotlines and kitschy retro-futuristic science fiction settings. It has simply gone too far. The Outer Worlds never decides whether or not it's joking. In the online Age of Irony, the game's bashfulness is understandable, but in the end it keeps The Outer Worlds from making real statements, and other games better dance the line between dark humor and commentary.

The game is a large-budget, front-office spectacle of the highest order. Big game worlds, large casts, a voice-acting bill that aims to push every indie developer out of the genre entirely. The clear aim is for Obsidian to gun for the throne held by Bethesda, but doing so by making Bethesda's game with better polish is a losing proposition.

There are bright spots. The Outer Worlds is mechanically competent, and many of the quests are crafted well within the game's limiting framework. However, it's impossible to overlook the degree to which Obsidian's hyper-talented team sold themselves short by making a game that does nothing new and makes no meaningful statement.

Pale imitation
Outer World is clearly aiming at being FallOut New Vegas part 2, in which Obsidian try to recreate all the systems and tone of that game without using the Fallout license. Unfortunatly, it falls apart in two ways. First of is because New Vegas is a 2011 title, that is amazing in many aspects, but since then the RPG landscape has evolved. The second is that it simply doesnt match it in terms of depth, quality of writing and even gameplay.

Its a game that is way more limited than it should, not only in terms of game size, but also when it comes to rewarding exploration, different builds and creative thinking.

The gunplay is pretty terrible, which is a shame since the game rellies so much on it. On the other hand, its also a piss easy game on normal difficulty, so the gameplay never stops you from moving forward with the story.

Quest design is very generic and bog standard. The writing is a bit better than the typical AAA Rpg you get nowadays, but fails to capture my attention and its goofyness gets tiring.

Visuals are awful overly contrasted cartoonish, terrible to look at.

Overal there are a lot of flaws in here for sure, but its enjoyable for people who ache a new properly made Fallout title. Its comfort food, which is fine for what it is, but very disappointing for people who had higher hopes for it. Even more disappointing considering that its probably the best AA and AAA RPG released this year.

I don't get excited for many new releases, but The Outer Worlds was one that I was expecting quite a lot. From Obsidian one of the top RPG makers going on in the past decade and it being a first person action RPG, it quickly gave memories of Fallout New Vegas which they also developed and is one of my favorite games. The idea of them taking New Vegas to the next level was something, like damn this could be one of the greatest games ever. Well now that it's out and completed: it's definitely not.

It's almost impossible to not mention New Vegas because the game copies so many things from it. The same idea of factions, dialogue choices, first person exploration, perks, slowing down time, and the list can go on. The problem is that it doesn't do anything new, and you quickly get a feeling of "I've played this before". One of its best accomplishments is that the bugs are fairly low, especially close to launch like this, it was normally a time to avoid Obsidian games since they take months to get things ironed out. The graphics are very good, the game is well polished with all dialogue being fully voiced, this is definitely well done all around on the technical side.

The gameplay is however kind of just okay. Yes I love me a good shooting RPG, and the shooting parts are definitely fine, but it seems that after the first area you've kinda seen everything that the game has to give. There's little to no systems that are introduced after 20% of the game is completed, so there's nothing that really keeps the game and exciting, there's no wonder to it all and it's easy to figure out. One thing that's missing from New Vegas (and other Bethesda titles) is that the map is all unveiled and there's no sense of discovery, you don't get to find random buildings and whatnot cause everything is already on the map. It's hard to even call it open world since the areas are generally small, there's no feeling of "damn I can go anywhere and do what I want". The upgrades to your weapons feel empty, you're just adding some stats numbers to them and it never feels like it makes much of a difference... also the weapons feel a little bit limited, it's like there is one set of them and then the 2nd half of the game features a better version of them and that's pretty much it. They weren't aiming for the biggest RPG ever, but it would have been nice to have a little bit more depth to the systems, and not just a rehash of what most of the Obsidian fans have already played.

It's not to say that it was a bad game and I've enjoyed my time with it, but it kind of feels like this was done by Ubisoft rather than Obsidian. It's like it's scared to take it up and notch with more depth, and it literally introduces nothing new to the table. It's very comfortable without taking much risk, but as I was playing I felt like I was just running through the numbers and playing an inferior (but more polished) version of one of my favorite games. The lore and the characters are all fine, and there isn't any major problems anywhere... but the game never really reaches any amazing moments where it's really impressive. Worth a shot, and will scratch that itch a little for this type of game that we hadn't got in a while, but I was definitely hoping for something bigger and better. I'm not even excited about a sequel now, unless they do a complete overhaul and go on a more innovative route.

Rises above mediocrity, but doesn't succeed in much else.
It's not disappointing but for me a lot of the narrative seemed shallow. You had multple ways to do things but none of them really felt like they had narrative depth, at least in the side content.
The main content really shined in your freedom and what the game let you do, as well as giving you some hard decisions, but it was ultimately shallow in the end as well. I wasn't expecting New Vegas or Fallout 1 and 2 quality, but considering the lead made Arcanum, Fallout 1 and 2, and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, some of my favorite games, I do wish there was a lot more substance.
I didn't necessarily need heavy and thoughtful themes like Fallout or Arcanum, since Vampire doesn't really have any strong narrative themes but instead presents an incredibly interesting world in which you feel as if the game reacts to every little thing you do, but I was hoping for ultimately a more interesting and immersive experience in the end. I think if I were less experienced with the genre I would have liked it more. The only area I felt the game shined was the first and third area, which presented complex moral dilemmas and plenty of solutions to those problems.
I definitely wish the side content was stronger, considering I did every goddamn piece of side content in the game. There were only a handful of quests I remember sticking out. Some of it belongs in an MMO, which is unforgivable.
Companions were okay- there were 3 out of the 5 that I enjoyed, and one of them felt pretty unnecessary. As far as their stories, they varied. There was one companion Ididn't like very much but I found her sidequest very well written and emotional. Another that I liked quite a bit but found her sidequest lacking and oddly short. Two companions that were good all around, and one companion with kind of a odd sidequest that feels unfinished.
As far as gameplay goes, it's the most polished Obsidian game to date. The gunplay was smooth and responsive, it always felt good to fire a gun. That said, the AI basically just strafes or runs straight towards you, and combined with the lack of weapon variety and enemy variety, it gets repetitive towards the end.
All in all, it's definitely a 7 for me.

Not exactly the new "New Vegas" everyone was expecting (very forgettable), but certainly a step in the right direction and a nice alternative to Fallout now that the series has gone to shit with whatever the f*ck 76 is...

The borderlands-esque world design is kinda off putting to me, it just feels so contrived

incredibly mediocre and boring, poorly written, none of the magic of new vegas is here, and the actual gunplay is just a joke. laughably easy game, the entire final sequence i completed by walking past everyone. it just wasnt a great game, it shows potential in areas for a sequel to blow it out of the water but im not really holding my breath on them making a game that is even half as good as new vegas (and i dont even like new vegas).

People keep saying it's a failed new vegas clone when it feels nothing like new vegas, people are being disappointed by their own expectations because they expected to eat jelly and got peanut butter.

Honestly this is about on the same level as FO4 for me. I enjoyed it well enough while playing it, but it leaves no lasting impressions, and over time feels more and more like just another WRPG in a long list of WRPGs. Fails to carve out its own identity. I'd much rather play something more interesting, ambitious and memorable yet flawed any day. Basically I'd rather play a memorable/fascinating 5/10 game than a solid but forgettable 7/10 game, but maybe that's just me.
