The renowned UK distribution company began life as a record store named Revolver Records that had long existed in the city of Bristol. In 1981, Revolver founded Recreational Records. Around the same time, they set up a distribution arm and became a member of The Cartel so that they would be able to distribute other independent labels throughout the United Kingdom.
By the end of the decade, Revolver USA was founded in San Francisco by Gary Held as a US branch.
Toward the end of Revolver's existence in 1993, they merged with APT and operated as Revolver/APT for a year before eventually changing their name to Vital Distribution in 1994.
