RED began in 1979 under the name Important Record Distributors, Inc.. The company changed its name to Relativity Entertainment Distribution in 1991 and eventually became known as RED Distribution. Sony Music Entertainment purchased 50% of the company in 1991, then bought the rest in 1994 making RED a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Music. In 2000, RUMM was founded as a division of RED to market and distribute music for independent Hip Hop labels. In 2014 RED was launched in the UK.
