Boomkat was spawned from the Manchester-based record store Pelicanneck Records, which existed from 1998 to 2007. The Boomkat website was launched in 2002; however, activities as a distributor/retailer did not begin until after Boomkat was incorporated in 2006. The company operates as a digital retailer, physical retailer, distributor, and parent company for several labels.
