Ratings Criteria
Anything that receives 4 stars has entered my personal 'canon'; such records I have a strong connection with that makes them particularly worthy of attention. So naturally, I'm pretty protective of the higher ratings, hence why I have so many 3 and 2.5 star ratings.
Ratings in the 2.5-3 range means I enjoy such albums; I probably return to a few songs from those albums, but as a whole I rarely give them much thought after I've given them a rating, though I definitely respect them. A 3.5 is similar, but there's a couple of genuinely great songs or great elements spread throughout the record.
A 2 star album is an album I have nothing against, but which holds no particular appeal to me. Anything with a rating below that is a record I'd rather forget. I rarely give very low ratings; I don't know why that is. Maybe because I have more interest in depth rather than breadth in my collection, and thus rarely listen to records outside of genres I know that I like.
I wish I had the time and desire to write more reviews, but I'm doing a PhD, so I spend all week researching and writing. I don't want to do more writing in my spare time; I just want to enjoy the music I hear.

I can definitely understand not watching something that you don't like, but I, personally, am more of a completist, which I think makes it hard for me to muster up the energy to invest in a show. Unless I just hate it, I feel compelled to keep going. Like with Community, I'm not really a fan, but I've seen all of it so far, so I feel obliged to continue. I'm like that with everything, though. If I start reading a book, I intend to finish it, even if not right away.
I don't know what your specific complaints about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were, but I didn't care much for the first few episodes either, but then they started focusing a lot more on the characters and their interactions, and that's when it improved in my opinion. It's still finding its way as far as a story arc goes, and it has a bit of that monster of the week sort of feel that Buffy S1 had, but I think it's been worth watching, and I'm really not a big fan of the Avengers movies or anything, so I'm kind of surprised, but I think you have a more rigorous TV watching schedule than I do, so I can understand why you might be hesitant to return to it.
I actually liked the movie as a whole but your criticisms of the story are well-merited, and I love that you mentioned the "show, don't tell" problem with the movie (voice-over is so frequently a narrative crutch in cinema, and while I think it works alright in Gone Girl it's not exceptional)
