THE MODERN UNDERGROUND IS WHERE IT'S AT

*****
Thursday May 09, 2013, 02:31 AM PDT

I took Tuesday off work. I got up, got ready, started to make my journey and got most of the way on the train when I thought it would seriously be better if I did leave work alone just for one day and rest a back that was giving me some grief and had been very very sore and sometimes painful at work on the Monday.

I stayed on the train all the way to the city, changed trains to Bondi Junction and then waited for the 380 bus to Bondi Beach.

This is where I lived from the age of 20 for a while. After a bit, I decided to take an old walking route back through a few streets to where I lived with my gf and two other gals in 1979. Back away from the beach a lot has remained the same as it was over three decades gone.

I came to a little park with swings and a slippery dip and the shade of trees. Here is where I would sometimes come and read the paper, or the New Musical Express, or maybe pen an airmail to a friend in the States.

And sometimes, a few years on, here I would sometimes bring my little boy to play and maybe there'd be another kid or two there. In a little park. Back from the beach. On a quiet day. When I was a young man. A young man a good few years younger than my boy, my grown son, is now.

Memories came flooding back. Some vivid. Some like echoes. I have no ghosts here. Everyone I knew is gone. I myself am gone. I daydream of days long long past and at my age it all seems so beautiful....so sad to know I can't go back....that the only real ghost here now is me...come to haunt.....for moments.

Now I can understand people my age wishing to find - and finding - what they find in their celebration of the times of their youth, of all those fresh, new things all gone.

But man....what is it with all these people who mourn for a time

THAT

THEY WEREN'T

EVEN

A

FUCKING

*******

Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows.
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?

That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

****** MY NAME HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BLIND NEW YORK VIKING STREET MUSICIAN DUDE******

Ma jeunesse fout l'camp
Tout au long d'un poème
Et d'une rime à l'autre
Elle va bras ballants
Ma jeunesse fout l'camp
A la morte fontaine
Et les coupeurs d'osier
Moissonnent mes vingt ans

Nous n'irons plus au bois
La chanson du poète
Le refrain de deux sous
Les vers de mirliton
Qu'on chantait en rêvant
Aux garçons de la fête
J'en oublie jusqu'au nom
J'en oublie jusqu'au nom

Nous n'irons plus au bois
Chercher la violette
La pluie tombe aujourd'hui
Qui efface nos pas
Les enfants ont pourtant
Des chansons plein la tête
Mais je ne les sais pas
Mais je ne les sais pas

Ma jeunesse fout l'camp
Sur un air de guitare
Elle sort de moi même
En silence à pas lents
Ma jeunesse fout l'camp
Elle a rompu l'amarre
Elle a dans ses cheveux
Les fleurs de mes vingt ans

Nous n'irons plus au bois
Voici venir l'automne
J'attendrai le printemps
En effeuillant l'ennui
Il ne reviendra plus
Et si mon cœur frissonne
C'est que descend la nuit
C'est que descend la nuit

Nous n'irons plus au bois
Nous n'irons plus ensemble
Ma jeunesse fout l'camp
Au rythme de tes pas
Si tu savais pourtant
Comme elle te ressemble
Mais tu ne le sais pas
Mais tu ne le sais pas

The 'golden mile' of record shops is legendary and working at Ashwoods really was like Dads Army and with all the shenanigans. And like you say record buyers are an obsessive bunch - you'd see the same faces all the time in the loop of buying and selling. If I kept all mine I'd have enough for a well stocked shop!

hey, thanks for the entertaining wall post. nice to hear a version of rock history straight from the horses mouth (no diss on your age, but you were there). I'm 26 and I feel like I digested the lore of the 60's and 70's pretty wholly in my teens and I understand something of its value but less of how those classics came to be considered classics. Your post illuminated some of that for me, especially with your neat explication of All Along the Watchtower.

So I wonder where this leaves us as music listeners. We've reevaluated the canon by claiming it is irrelevant and built on the backs of poorer men. The CD's are still there to admire and enjoy, but no longer should we prop them up to a godhood. I guess that's what bothered me about the original post. People are trying to shoehorn critically acclaimed albums from earlier in this century into a kind of perfect narrative of "we still have classics," when we know that the truth is far more complex.

The great music of the world is out there hidden in the tiny, overlooked souls of someone who just knows how to hit the right spot, musically speaking. I feel like this century is our chance to reevaluate how we evaluate music. There is so much access and variation out there that no one has to agree on any top 10 as the understood paradigm...all that does is overlook other artists who contribute just as much to whatever genre or sound these supposedly superior albums contain, when really they just sold more units and had the right media outlets pushing them at the right time. I don't want to take value away from those records, but I also don't want to over-ascribe value to them just for the sake of creating a new "standard."

Ah, well. Gotta make the most of the music we do hear while we can, right? Your list is great regardless.
