5 stars = No substitutes; nothing quite compares.
4.5 stars = Nearly flawless
4 stars = Awesome; maybe one or two filler tracks.
3.5 stars= Pretty good; not groundbreaking, but enjoyable nonetheless.
3 stars = Decent; flawed but enjoyable in certain situations.
2.5 stars = "Eh"; not terrible but nowhere near great (maybe holds some sentimental value).
2 stars = Mostly bad but with an inkling of redeeming value.
0.5 - 1.5 = Varying levels of god-awfulness; either way, don't bother.

I try to write reviews for every album I catalog (meaning the number of albums RYM says I own is always about ten to twenty less than what I actually own). Music is too easily disposable these days. I feel like forcing myself to be able to write at least a blurb about every album requires me to listen to it more often and more intently, and gives me a clearer perspective on why I like or dislike it so that I'm able to express that opinion with something more than all caps sentences and exclamation points (though I'm not promising a complete refrain from that).

December 6th, 2013:
Though I still regularly visit RYM, I haven't actively managed my catalog for some time now. That's the result of trying to review everything as I rate it; I just ran out of steam. But I've decided to start back up again and try to get my catalog current, so I'll be rating albums in bunches (mostly sans reviews).
While I'd like to revisit everything that I've neglected to rate before giving it an official rating, I just don't have the energy to do that right now, so most of the ratings will be based on a combination of the memory of how much I enjoyed it and if I feel like I'll ever listen to it again.

I have many Japanese friends who claim they "don't know how to use Facebook", include friends who... use Facebook.
I also think the reason more people don't upload music online is (at times) because of a "No! That's bad!" mentality.
