it's great but i think a lot of the charm of BOTW is lost in how bloated the experience is and how overpowered you are. i get that it leads to a situation where you are guaranteed ingenuity if you have half a brain cell (cue that twitter clip of the guy carrying the balls one by one vs. the girl who creates the bulldozer...) but i don't feel like that freedom leads to as many special moments as you'd think. i felt like BOTW was a game hard earned, where traversing the map was an act of will.

also the dungeons are still pretty meh, though the zora one had some good moments

Can't believe this is now/already below BOTW in the all-time charts. People really value novelty/being the first to do something new more than being a better game that improves everything. Pissed me off quite a lot even if I fall for this mentally sometimes myself. I'm all for judging games according to the time they came from but jesus, retrospectively I think BOTW will go down as one of the most overrated Zelda/Nintendo games of all-time compared with TOTK.

I hope, as some say, that time will do TOTK more justice.

I mean, I can't think of anything that this game greatly improves upon the original, it only expands upon it.

Exploring Breath of the Wild felt absolutely enchanting to me. "Exploring" this game was a chore. Does anyone really find any of the story or side quests remotely interesting in this game? It more so felt like the game was just trying to slow me down.

They're not even that far apart. If anything, I think I initially overrated BotW because I played it so long ago and was just going along with everyone else was saying even though I didn't enjoy it as much as other Zelda games, but TotK just kind of affirmed how I felt about this new series direction and it kind of felt like playing the same game all over again with nothing new to offer besides cool building mechanics. Everything I was hoping for (better dungeons, less grindy shrines, less repetitive collectibles, less oversaturated side quests, more of an actual story, revamped combat) did not deliver and was just underwhelming.

The expectations were different with BotW because we didn't know what we were getting into, but with TotK people had expectations and I think it all comes down to how those expectations were met. In that regard, TotK was more underwhelming than BotW.

I somewhat agree but it's also hard to fault when people prefer to (or even subconsciously) rate on a relativist scale - context definitely matters a lot. Some people pan Pokemon Red/Blue as a barely functional pile of primitive trash compared to future installments. But it's hard to understate how much of a cultural juggernaut the original was, how little competition there was in terms of handheld RPGs, and how tremendously innovative it was to the genre.

I can definitely understand the sentiment behind both groups and don't really think there's a wrong way to rate

I think what it comes down to is that a lot of people don't find enjoyment with this much freedom. there is no way to really play this game and not many suggestions on how you should play. It can be overwhelming and make a lot of the mechanics feel pointless once you find your niche. Personally for me I think this is the gold standard. The amount of ways I can approach the most basic of things is insane, but it still isn't without its issues like reused map and the lack of a hard mode.

I don't know, what many people liked about BOTW was that you could do what you want, do everything in the way/order you decide, and this game is the same but expanded 10 times. The freedom is limitless, I don't think people hated that, the re-used map (which is one of the worst/laziest complaints I've heard tbh) was probably more of an issue for people yeah

the most obvious complaint about a game doesn't necessarily make it a lazy/bad complaint.

the most "in one ear, out the other" game of 2023.

put in my 100+ hours like it was a 9 to 5, and then checked out and havent really thought about it since lol

actually kinda feel that way as well. I say "kinda" 'cause the leadup to the final boss has stuck with me, especially since I found it early on in the game. such a better leadup than BotW's.
    • The_Prep 2024-02-27 04:37:28.476361+00
Same. If the game had a story with actual emotional impact then it would probably resonate more with me, but it just felt like was really for nothing. Crazy because I was loving it when I first got my hands on it and was in the honeymoon phase and used it as an escape from life and quickly turned on it after completion.

"the most 'in one ear, out the other' game of 2023"

unfortunately true. the only reason I put in my 100+ hours on this game is because I was literally bedridden with health issues. I appreciate the discussion about novelty vs. obvious improvement but I'd be lying if I said completing TOTK didn't feel like a chore, especially when the first 25 hours of BOTW felt incomparably mindblowing at the time.

This is false because Hogwarts Legacy exists.

Like I haven’t seen ANY discussion about anything of that one beyond the initial backlash. Whereas with this I’ve seen tons of videos and discussion regarding its mechanics, themes, big moments and wacky creative physics stuff
    • The_Prep 2024-02-27 04:39:41.997891+00
Comparing mid to midder there's no point.

I feel like the reception to this game will be altered massively depending on how different the next game is for everyone saying it’s a bad sign this is too similar.

It’s very apparent they closed a book on this style of Zelda game and there’s a lot of reasons you can point to as to why this one chose to be iterative (ex. Switch’s limited power jump from Wii U, BotW being so much more popular than any prior game it’s crazy). Freedom will remain but other elements like collectibles, dungeons, combat mechanics and story delivery could be shaken up again.
We still ended up getting a 3D World and Odyssey after they made a Galaxy 2.

Personal point but the bloat here doesn’t bother me since it’s more in the matter of new mechanics and ideas rather than needless invisible subsystem expansion.
