Vertical platformer
Genre
Platforming games in which the player must ascend or descend a level in order to reach their goal. Classic single-screen examples include Space Panic and Donkey Kong, but vertical scrolling techniques are frequently used to extend the effective level height as demonstrated in Ice Climber [アイスクライマー], Mr. Driller [ミスタードリラー] and Downwell. Ladders and springs are frequently used to facilitate movement between horizontal platforms in ascending platformers. In contrast, breakable blocks are frequent components of descending platformers, which inhibit the action of gravity on the player.
