Cruelty Squad

Rainbow Six and other retro shooters as interpolated by crude 2000s internet art. Revenge of the Sunfish gone "cyberpunk". Caustic and abrasive in a way the newer commercial indie fears, to not damage the well-maintained hedges in accessibility. Goofy writing styled laid on themes of the modern tech ideals exaggerated. Visual style almost accidentally places it in opposition of the "boomer shooter" revival, graphics and sound splattering to the frame in a manner too garish to be easily nostalgic for many.
Quite possibly the first true case of Godot Engine kino.

Bizarre, revolting and wholly unhinged. This game is one of the weirdest things I've ever played, when I first gave this a go I thought it was a joke, and I didn't play it for ages but I recently came back and have had the time of my life playing it. Once you fully get over the initial difficulty and get yourself a few different weapons scattered throughout the different levels (I highly recommend grabbing the silenced SMG on Sin Space Engineering) you can really start to make this game your bitch, even more so once you unlock the grappendix, allowing you to fling yourself across the map like Tarzan high on Adderall. Running through the levels and endorsing the chaos by murdering everyone with your host of implants and WMDs. On top of all the fantastic gameplay the setting and satire the game presents you is fantastic, even though this game does look like it was made by someone who took all the Acid available on earth, the satire of corporate culture and capitalism in general is fantastic! Easily the best example of this is Mall Madness where you're tasked with killing the Mayor who is proposing a "Revolutionary" 1% corporate tax rate. This also gets you questioning if you really are the good guy in all this or just a pawn of this corporate hellscape.

Overall, once I got the hang of this game I had an absolute blast, I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of FPS games or just wants to experience one of the most bizarre yet enjoyable games out there.

fantastic movement, great gunplay, fun, innovative mechanics to learn and manipulate, only thing is i wish there was more content in this game. i love cruelty squad and it deserves more recognition.

let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: the visuals feel like passing your eyes through a cheese grater. they feel like they were made in MSPaint or Photoshop by an 11-year old, but there's an artistic intention behind this choice, albeit a very unpleasant one.

once you've gotten accustomed to the visuals, the game reveals itself to be a really good shooter with a very dark dystopian story and some really fun controls. it can be frustrating at first, but the learning curve is pleasant, and not as sharp as might seem at first.

not recommended while high on Benadryl.

i get entirely what this game is doing, and I hate it. It's completely up its own ass and you should just play deus ex instead
