yap, my new hobby is making stupid drawings inspired by some favourite albums (i have no life)
and i'm writing dumb reviews with minimal command of English but i don't give up.
:P
About my rating "system": There's no system. I don't care about an album being goofy, cool, hyped, popular, experimental, cheesy, pretentious, lo-fi, avant-garde, mainstream, etc-etc-etc. If the music has something that makes me want to listen to it again and again, if it gets close to me, if it has something, anything, that can impress me, that's enough. I think people can be too busy tagging things, while trying hard to be loyal to their musical-taste-image instead of enjoying things, and they miss a lot of great stuff.
But here's a few things I usually like:
- innovative and experimental things that are not just experimental for the sake of being experimental; being challenging while staying music-wise and enjoyable without ending up as a pretentious/snobbish crap - I think that's the hardest thing for a musician.
- pop: a good pop album is better than anything else ever; it's timeless and layered and it can reflect the most different moods
- any kind of folk (especially if it has something dark and freaky in it)
- alternative female singer/songwriters OR alternative girl bands (they're mostly always awesome)
- singer/songwriters with good messages and the right amount of sensibility/character
- gothic stuff
- and anything dreamy/dark/nostalgic/moody, or really, anything that can mesh me into its own world
So when I give something five stars, it doesn't always mean that I find it musically brilliant, or musically ""important"" (does that word make any sense anymore?!), and it doesn't even have to mean that it's flawless and I love every single song on it - though usually I do - it's just that, as a whole, it had a deep impact on me, moved something in me in a powerful way, and influenced me.

I think you should give Pentangle another shot, they strike me as the most similar among the greats of old. And in case you weren't aware of it, Susanne Sundfør's eponymous (quite folky) debut has a few rather nice tracks, too. (Speaking of whom, no The Brothel in your collection?)
Since we have some decent overlap, do you think you'd be up for some mutual recommendations one of these days?
I'd just need to sort out my PC problems first, yesterday I needed to employ a hairdryer to boot it (bad cap on board).
