See, I think we're VERY on the same page because I liked the movie overall too haha. For all the valid complaints, I really do feel like it's a fairly impassioned and unique film even if it doesn't hit me half as much as it seems to be hitting most people. It kind of works in a way, especially that Red Shoes esque bit near the end that everyone talks about. It just doesn't feel like it embodies its own spirit thoroughly enough or something,
Yeah the opening was like kind of terrible if you ask me, and I was more or less waiting for the film to review that it was like a movie/commercial shoot or something, but I guess it was supposed to be actually 'good' and not a joke haha. For me, the finale bit is the only time where the film actually REALLY hit me because lately the idea of like, fantasy as a coping mechanism, unattainable dreams, etc. has been working a lot for me. I guess that was why I loved the overt artifice and slyly meta nature of One From the Heart so much when I watched that recently, whereas the vaguely ironic, emptily nostalgic aspects of La La Land just kind of didn't work on an emotional level for me. But again, it was very energetic and agreeable in a lot of ways so I definitely did like it alright.
A bunch of Marguerite Duras films have been popping up on Youtube in the past few months (for instance, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk_MpIWQRt8). Thought you'd be intrigued, knowing how much you liked Agatha et les Lectures Illimitees ;)
It doesn't, really. Honestly, I was just providing context behind some of the people in the movie, that's all. I just enjoyed the film for what it is: a comedy.
haha, i saw in the comment box for birdman you really did not like it. i just finished it myself and wrote a review for it; it was a conflicting film for me to watch haha. why do you hate it exactly? i can imagine why people hate it, but you always word things so well :0
Your review of Drive the soundtrack was fantastic! While I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the film, I did love the soundtrack. And the ambient side was pretty cool too. I did notice the foreshadowing right away from "Night Call". But your analysis of "A Real Hero" was impressive. Makes the film a lot deeper than I gave it credit for. I'll have to rewatch it in a while and really think about it on a more intellectual level instead of just being awed by the pretty lights and awesome synths haha
Also, see another lover of E*MO*TION on RYM. Carly Rae is awesome! Friended you :)
