You noticed that very quickly... literally rewatched chinatown yesterday!

Yes, it's a great movie, but not flawless. And the sort of thing that was perfect for me 4-5 years ago.

Congrats on 1K, I actually quite admired the film and was able to filter out the content after some time, but overall I still place too much emphasis on the meaning of films to be willing
to embrace it.

Yeah, I cab aooreciate stylized melodrama from the past most of the time, many current commercial flicks handle it poorly not just because the melodrama is too unrealistic but also because it doesnt go far enough as far as making the melodrama clearly distanced from any attempt at realism and making it instead into its own unique form of acting thats supposed to be overblown. The cinematography was also obviously very well done and once the film picks up pace it becomes hard to look away and you almost forget the messaging thats going on. I also somewhat expected the film to be even more overtly racist from how its talked about, not to say that what is shown is really any less bad, but all the talk about it made me a little more immune to it than if I had no prior knowledge of the film, which made it easier to focus on the technical aspects, since I knew I wasnt gonna discover any mindblowing subversive subtext after a while of watching it.

Definitely more former than latter, though it stumbles in its final act. But Israelite directs the hell out of it. I'd say it's sorta like Twilight meets Chronicle.

that's part of the joy of silent films, they can have such strong tonal dissonance that something as strangely fucked-up as The Teddy Bears can be made!
