If you decided my ratings aren't pretentious enough for your tastes here's some of my hot takes that'll be sure to get 90% of people who see my page upset.
- JRPG's, as a genre, are often horribly outdated and have refused to adopt any of the gameplay evolutions that have cropped up in the genre over the last 2 decades. Thing is, this is the correct business decision because this is what the fans want. It just means that they're the most "either you get it or you don't" genre on the market.
- Bloodborne is one of the most overrated games ever made; the story is a lazy rehash of a handful of HP Lovecraft stories with very little done to hide it, the combat is built around playing like a lobotomite, and the weapon placement ruins the majority of build variety. It's also directly responsible for the creative changes that led to the travesty that is Dark Souls 3.
- The Last Of Us obtaining and maintaining popularity is a paradox because the only reason I can see for the average person to enjoy it, is to completely ignore what actually happens in the games and the fact the creator is a hack who hates his audience and is permanently upset that he couldn't cut it in hollywood - just like David Cage, but at least his games are funny.
- DOOM (2016) has 1000 times the love and care put into it than DOOM Eternal got and I really do not understand what happened in between them to cause such a downgrade.
- The removal of content in any live service game is completely unacceptable barring extenuating circumstances. This extends to content being rendered pointless over time, specifically in the context of old cosmetic options not being brought up to date. This was about Destiny 2 but it extends even to FF14. Dropped both games for the same reasons.
- One hit kills in PvP games are almost universally bad design since it's almost impossible for a player to actually learn anything from the loss of the engagement when they come up and you can't improve your aim if you die too fast to even get a chance.
- Striving for realism is one of the worst things a dev team can do but it's not for the reasons people typically point to; running slow and bloated graphics budgets are a bit annoying but awful environment design from a gameplay perspective and inconsistent realism leading to horribly unfun gameplay mechanics are so much worse.
- Writing in games needs to be looked at much more critically than it currently is, but at the same time far too many critics of game writing ignore or completely misunderstand good writing because it isn't structured the same way as books/film/tv.
Anyway my ratings only account for like maybe 10% of all games I've played, but if feel my memory isn't good enough or that I didn't play a good enough chunk of a game, I don't rate it. This is why I have so few bad ratings; if a game sucks I just stop playing, and if I continue its shitty-ness tends to cause it to exit my mind immediately after finishing it.
Taking rec's too; I tend to prefer horror games or shooters, but basically anything that could be described as esoteric, oppressive, or surreal I'll probably be interested in.
