Tool aren't simply grunge, no, but that and their progressive/art rock sides are what I hear strongest of all. Alice Cooper was a big influence on heavy metal music certainly, and his whole image/style is metal as anything. But overall I think of him as a (shock) rock musician more than a metal one.
As for Meshuggah and Acid Bath, ha, no, there's no danger of me calling them that. They're varied and incorporate a lot, but no grunge or easy listening that I've heard ;)
