My friends, I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary, I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey SubaHibi. All right, here is how I feel about whiskey SubaHibi:

If when you say whiskey SubaHibi you mean the devil's brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink eroge that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.

But, if when you say whiskey SubaHibi you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips, and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer; if you mean the stimulating drink eroge that puts the spring in the old gentleman's step on a frosty, crispy morning; if you mean the drink eroge which enables a man to magnify his joy, and his happiness, and to forget, if only for a little while, life's great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows; if you mean that drink eroge, the sale of which pours into our treasuries untold millions of dollars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitiful aged and infirm; to build highways and hospitals and schools, then certainly I am for it.

This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.

Subahibi is one of the most fascinating pieces of media I have ever created. The author is in one light a genius for managing what he was able to with the complicated story he wove, on another hand, it is one of the most destructive and damaging pieces of media I have ever seen. This game not only is completely homophobic, but fetishizes lesbian relationships to a very disturbing degree, completely indulges and lavishes in the most depraved of fantasies that I cant even being to fathom were created under the idea of them being appealing in a sexual sense. This game revels in the most disgusting fantasies and shows no remorse or sign that these moments are bad or even questionable in a single sense. One of the most disgusting to me and one of the most personally hurtful things this game does is its portrayal of mental illness in the game, to be frank, one of the characters is ELLUDED to have schizophrenia, suffering from voices, hallucinating figures and having sequences that are incoherent and nonsensical in nature, the portrayal of this is disgusting to say the least. It plays directly into so many awful stereotypes that are so common among schizoaffective people in such a way that it dosen't just feel like the author was careless or due to a lack of knowledge, but as a intentionally hurtful piece of media meant to play into those stereotypes so directly. Absolutely disgusting. Another fact is the rampant homophobia that is present in the story, with one of the most "moral" characters in the game being just straight up homophobic with no resolution to this fact or any character development. He is just homophobic and this fact is portrayed not in a negative light, or even a morally grey light, but more in a positive light. I cant help to think that with the amount of women with male genitalia present in the story (they are not trans either) with them literally being FETISHIZED directly in one part of the story, and the rampant homophobia that is present in the story, I have a feeling that a lot of these elements come from a closeted person in denial about themselves. As someone who was once closeted myself, I find a lot of that denial present that I once partook in to be present in the story.
But let me go into some of the things that stop this game from being one of the worst things I have ever played, the story outside of these EXTREMELY JARRRING and DISGUSTING aspects, is one of the most precision crafted stories I have ever read. Its talks of philosophy are fascinating and the implications and ideas that it presents bring so many fantastic and nuanced conversations into the light in such an interesting medium such as a visual novel. The characters atleast in the first half are so well created that it really feels like they are truly alive and breathing as they change throughout the story and become developed and changed by the events that take place in the story. I also find the artstyle to be so charming and some of the more trippy and abstract moments of the story are drawn so good that it really does suck you into the confusion and mystery of what they mean. Not all the characters are as damaging and terrible though, plently of the characters such as Zakuro, Himika, Ayana and Yuki. They are fantastically done and whenever they are on the screen I breathe a sigh of relief. But even some great characters and an expertly written storyline can save the fact that this is one of the most awful, cruel, masochistic games I have ever read. Truly feel appalled.

i think about this game a lot. through all the (mostly unnecessary) filth you have to trudge through there’s something really beautiful that can be found in it. its a shame i feel like epstien (average subahibi fan) or trying to defend any of it tho :(

I'd be lying if I said two things: the soundtrack isn't my favorite ever for a visual novel; I don't think frequently about how this shit could have been so good (like, ENTIRELY good without making compromises concerning.. "borderline" content) and the denpa pillar it strives to be (and kinda is for its medium)

This is my definite take: szak's opening/endings and BGMs MAKE the game
