The Abyss-dwelling wizard brothers Garamon and Tyball accidentally summon a demon, the Slasher of Veils, while experimenting with inter-dimensional travel. Garamon is used as bait to lure the demon into a room imbued with virtue. However, the demon offers Tyball great power if he betrays Garamon. Tyball agrees, but the betrayal fails; Garamon is killed, but seals the demon inside the room. Because he lacks virtue, Tyball cannot re-enter by himself, and plans to sacrifice Baron Almric's daughter, Arial, at the doorway to gain entrance.
Quite frankly, one of the best games ever made. Knowing little about the Ultima series, I picked this game up when it was released, and then lost myself in an immersive world full of challenges both of the fighting kind and puzzle kind. The first person perspective was novel for a CRPG at the time, with most of the contemporary products being isometric or close to it, and the free movement set it a rung or two up the ladder from the steppers such as Eye of the Beholder..
The combination of great story, first person perspective and the aforesaid challenges all added up to a transcendental experience. It's held up pretty well too over the ages, and since places like GOG sell it for a song (coupled with DoSBox) there's no reason to not check it out.

For those uninitiated, this game directly (and indirectly) inspired so many games, I'd definitely put it in top 10 most influential games ever. Here's a short list and I'm probably missing some:
Elder Scrolls: Arena -> Daggerfall -> Morrowind -> Oblivion -> Skyrim System Shock -> BioShock -> Dead Space Deus Ex Half-Life 2 Tomb Raider Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Arx Fatalis
Thief -> MGS & Splinter Cell -> Hitman & Assassin's Creed. Funny thing is the stealth in this game is awful, might as well not exist outside of the spells due the balancing, but because of the AI developments that were mostly combat focused the team were able to go on to make stuff like Thief.
