I went to the store in '98 with another game in mind, which I can't remember, that a friend had recommended. My mum convinced me to pick something of my own volition instead. Ocarina had just released and I was captivated by its golden box. The game still plays fantastically, and was innovative and influential as hell, but is a little too cryptic in hindsight. Still, it remains an adventure that holds up to this day and is an astounding representation of the N64's capabilities.

The game is awesome until you reach the Water Temple. I found it way too confusing. I'm at the Shadow Temple now and I'm not having a good time. Maybe I'm finally hitting the age where I can no longer enjoy anything but what I grew up playing.
Water temple is amazing but only if you go into it prepared to keep close track of every room you've visited. It kind of needs to be played in a single session as well. As a kid I autopiloted the dungeon until I got stuck, and ended up having a very bad time running around for a solution. Replaying it a decade later (with basically no memory of the layout/puzzles), I went in with a mindset of extra attentiveness and I was able to really appreciate the challenge.
I can't quite call it perfect (some of the character models and prerendered backgrounds look very poor and unpolished) and so while I don't feel comfortable calling it the greatest game ever made, I think the gameplay, controls, characters, writing, and music more than stand the test of time and are still impressive to this day. It may not completely live up to its reputation, but it's a fantastic game.
and before someone says "the most acclaimed game of all time is overhated???" i mean that its age is brought up more than i think is fair imo. maybe my familiarity with Majora has made me comfortable but the N64 models + textures still have a very distinct art style that make them work even if they are objectively "lower quality"
RCP is HUNG UP!!
Oh! MY GOD!!
