watching someone play this on stream and the constant dialogue is so grating. i was expecting the game to be a lot more free-form but theres explicit arbitrary objectives so far in the intro. i wish they just trusted players to figure things out on their own as they go along.
i wouldnt call it arbitrary, that stuff is only in the intro since the game has a handful of indepth mechanics that have to be explained. there's always going to be story objectives that you follow to progress if you want to get to further parts of the game, akin to hades. its not a free-roam game, but for the most part you are on your own. youll be going in the zone, getting energy and materials, moving to the next area, rinse and repeat, extracting, managing your goods and repairing at the garage, and then going back out to do it all again.
story bits are frequent at the beginning but as the game goes on, additional dialogue gets delegated to an optional button prompt, while core dialogue for mission objectives play automatically (but only apply when doing the main story). dont be fooled by the introduction, it lets you hold the wheel after you learn the important stuff.
13 hours in and this is an early contender for GOTY, love the streamlined vehicle building and the survival elements are spectacular, extraction mechanic and the dynamic constantly shifting world sets you up for a lot of really tense and exciting moments. story seems alright so far, but the worldbuilding reminds me a lot of the better moments of control. curious to see how the gameplay amps up beyond the opening zone
-the story is mediocre and is told in a very annoying way, it's very hard to pay attention especially if you're esl and the you have to read subtitles when you're running away from a killer storm and you have three very uninteresting characters yapping on the radio,
-the ui is quite possible the worst Ive ever seen in a videogame, and I've played everything from critically acclaimed AAA games to niche indies.
-I don't like handholding but this game does the opposite and it takes a while to figure things out. I was very close to asking steam for a reimburse because I was wasting a lot of time
and even with all that, I had a blast playing the game because the atmosphere is fantastic, the "creature" design is very creative, the core loop of the game is masterfully crafted and addictive, and that car really becomes your best friend
super cool concept and atmosphere but man this got repetitive pretty fast. i think the roguelike kinda angle they took didn't really work well for me and the game has a bit too much micromanaging and all the mechanics keep piling onto each other and it just feels like too much sometimes, some of which were just straight up annoying
