Extraction

A subgenre of action games built around online multiplayer in which the winning conditions are to survive and escape a set zone of play. These games are often similar to battle royale games in their use of survival elements such as scavenging materials, permanent death, and an increasing challenge of other players who've accumulated loot. In these games, players can accumulate loot and bring that loot outside of the normal competitive zones once extracted. The reward and risk element of bringing accumulated weapons, armor, and gear that can be lost forever into a competitive match is a major feature of this genre. Escape From Tarkov is a pioneering game to the extent that games in the genre are sometimes called "Tarkov-likes."

Some examples of this genre include: Hunt: Showdown, Vigor, and Scavengers. Other games such as Battlefield 2042 and Tom Clancy's The Division have incorporated the genre in unique modes. The genre saw a rise in the 2010s decade alongside the sharp rise of online gaming.
