You ever play a game you adored as a kid but realise is mediocre as an adult? That's this game for me as I feel it doesn't hold up as well as most 16-bit games despite loving it as a child.
The main problem here is how basic this game is, it's like Tarzan from five years later only with 2d graphics, meaning we have Mowgli swinging from tree to tree collecting fruit (instead of coins) and fighting off African wildlife who want to have him as their next meal. There are several differences here, the biggest is that there's a boss battles every second level rather Mowgli needing to find the exit like Tarzan does in his game. Said boss battles are decent as they utilise Mowgli’s full move set which includes jumping on enemies to kill them and throwing different types of fruit at them. Also, like Tarzan, we have rather cheap renditions of the songs from the film as the soundtrack, this is inexcusable as the 60’s film had amazing music that remain classic to this day. If you're wondering why this game was made when it did, it came out around the time the first live action film was released, that's more of a trivia as this game follows the cartoon in terms of the story rather than the live action counterpart or the book both of them are based on. One final complaint here is that given how this is a 16-bit game the character interactions are limited as Mowgli fights most of them as bosses with only baloo and Bagheera as his allies, he even fights king Louie even though he wasn't really a bad guy in the film (or rather he didn't want to eat Mowgli like Kaa and Shere khan did.
It’s a decent Disney tie in game with gorgeous graphics and acceptable gameplay, its nothing special but is far ahead of the competition when it comes to 90s platformers from the company.
