2D platformer
Genre
Platforming games that scroll from side to side, 2D platformers focus on horizontal and vertical jumping to reach an end goal. Common features are floating platforms, pitfalls, and enemies that are often defeated by being jumped on top of. Super Mario Bros. is generally considered the game that popularized 2D platformers, becoming one of the most successful video games of all-time. Other popular games include Donkey Kong Country, Kirby's Adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Rayman.
NOTE: Some games are rendered with three-dimensional graphics, but that does not make them 3D platformers. Examples of three-dimensional 2D platformers include Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, New Super Mario Bros., and Yoshi's Story.
