fun - jumping puzzles a la guild wars 2 or maplestory are a lot of fun, and the bumpiness of it is part of its character for me

Cruelty Squad
2021
meandering and boring - the gameplay is basically nonsense, with awful AI and empty levels
the draw of the game is the aesthetic, which holds the game pretty well
getting the final ending is a chore (even with the help of google), even the first one was annoying
grinding money is zzz, and yet still necessary

Cyberpunk 2077
2020
the greatness of CD Projekt ever since The Witcher has always been in the writing, and that hasn't changed much since. the gameplay in this game is pretty bad. the gunplay is unsatisfying, and mostly revolves around mindlessly shooting at braindead AI. the boss fights are pathetically easy, even on the hardest difficulty. swiping at every boss with a baseball bat just demolishes them all.
unfortunately, that's not all - not sure if it was true for the witcher 3, but here, the story is just flatout incomplete. incomplete questlines, brief endings that practically don't depend on anything you did in the game other than finishing quests, and almost all of it happens in cars.

really fun and atmospheric game. biggest problem is that it's insanely easy and really just feels like RE lite
could really use a new setting next game around with more varied levels

Deathloop
2021
the "immersive sim" tag is unironically 100% fitting. the gameplay itself felt meaningless outside of doing just that. everything about the gunplay is especially so unsatisfying. it's so weak.
the exploration is also borderline meaningless: you can get perks from completing "side quests" (called discoveries - very hard to actually call them "quests"), but almost all of them are simple stat boosts, and most can be found anywhere else. you get so many perks from killing regular mobs that there's never a need to actually do any of them.
i was thinking of bugsnax the entire time playing this as the gameplay in both is really just a means to finding clues to solve the greater story, but the gameplay was actually passable in bugsnax. it's just terrible in this, and none of the characters are particularly interesting at all, nor is the story.

Journey
2012
the only thing carrying this game is the main mechanic - i.e. that it's with a random partner. it's what makes it compelling at all. i can't imagine playing it alone. it'd probably have felt like a pure waste of time.
the actual gameplay and lore or whatever is who cares. you literally just walk through pretty environments without doing much at all.
i played with someone named narlision couldn't find them on steam though

it's ok. it's really cute and the bosses are ok considering what it is.
that said, too easy and collecting everything is annoying - was just fishing at the end for money. being able to only get one gacha at a time was also really annoying. level design is snooze. hiding bosses behind boss rushes is also really annoying. hollow knight did that and it was awful. at the very least, it wasn't too hard.

It doesn't seem like the LiS franchise has a clear direction to go in. What was originally a slice-of-life murder mystery has dropped the murder mystery, filling the gap in with even weaker links to what already wasn't quite there. This time around, there's another "mystery", although we already know what's going on basically right from the get-go. After chapter 2, 2 chapters are effectively wasted on filler content, oddly not even developing any of the characters much at all. The ending of chapter 4 reels it back in, revealing a second (more personal) villain: Jed. Chapter 5 then opens up with a bunch of flashbacks, and then a bizarre roundtable meeting where the characters basically tell you whether or not they think you're crazy. Jed then confesses, irrespective of your previous actions, and even the dialogue choices you make in meeting room. After some choices, the story ends.
A lot of people online criticized this for being too short, and being ~10-15 hours long, I thought that might not have been the case, but the weight of their critiques are seriously carried by the fact that probably half of that could be swapped out with anything at all without much issue.
I liked Wavelengths. It's a pretty cute chapter even though it's a lot of sitting around listening to dialogue. It was nice to see inside Steph's head, but maybe more of that could have just been done during the game.
That said, it makes entire sense that it wasn't. Alex's two closest friends during the main game, Steph and Ryan, are treated as objects throughout the story. They offer very little dissent or discussion, serving their purpose as romantic interests. There isn't anything else going for them in the story outside of the constant "positive vibes", and that kills me.
Something LiS did was give you the option to romance Chloe/Warren, but this wasn't important at all for their main interactions with Max (nor is Warren that important to begin with haha). They were first and foremost characters that had some part in the greater story of the game, not a romantic sideplot. Their interactions with Max were also flipped around, with there basically being one or two romantic scenes, and every other being integral to exploring their character or continuing the story.
The other characters here are even worse off with Alex. Each character usually has 1 big emotional scene, but after that we have: ...
Nothing. There's a plot bubble around Alex's main circle of friends, and that basically only includes Steph and Ryan (which, as mentioned, is really just a romantic triangle). All other characters outside of that bubble only show up to have their introductions and single character arc moment, and serve as flair NPCs at all other points in the story. They're boring yesmen until the end, where they decide to go absolute nutso on Alex.
I think that's all I really want to write right now. It's basically just a big blurb of random notes I had in my head. It's 4AM, and blah blah that's good enough. Not that I'd do any better at 9 lol.
Oh - no positive comments lol - need to fix that real quick. I liked the sense of community that the game presented, i.e. how closeknit everyone was - made me really think about "what if colorado" - haha. The setting was also a nice changeup from being rebellious teenagers, but also kinda a pain-in-the-ass considering how much harder it is to have that shared story between a bunch of characters when they have no obligation (i.e. school) to interact with each other.
