Xevious is and auto scrolling shmup and I don't like it. I typically write reviews much longer than this but I was not looking forward to reviewing or replaying this game. I don't like anything with an auto scrolling screen. For me, they range from tolerable to insufferable. This is somewhere in between. The control is the same as Galaga but on a four directional plane. In this game, the entire screen is free to explore, not like it helps. Enemies come in the form of flying saucers with red dots in the center. There are also enemies on the ground who fire projectiles from below. The enemies in the air can be shot with your own quick double projectiles. They evade when you get close enough. The enemies on the ground make playing this game a chore. You have a bomb you can drop and a reticle to help you aim. The problem is it's located far in front of you and with how quickly enemies appear on screen in the air you barely have time to aim for the ones on the ground. There are also spinning flying trapezoids that cut off any other sound in the game when shot including the music. Oh boy, the music. It sounds awful. In fact, every single sound in this game mixes together to make a grading, monotonous, tedious cacophony of in-congruent noise. At least the background, or rather ground, is well detailed. Probably looked really impressive in 1983. If you are going to play anything from Namco's library, try to avoid this one. It has not aged well and shows very little charm besides the flying trapezoids.

Xevious is more frustrating than fun. Its pretty much an autoscrolling space shooter where you are pushed along a path and must destroy ships. The thing is the game just often has too much going on and it gets repetitive fast. The game lacks really much variety or innovation.

Probably the last of the early 1980s arcade games that I really got into. Xevious demands that you take care of business both in the sky and on the ground. The game scrolls vertically so you are always firing your guns under pressure, plus the kooky and repetitive "alien" sound loop also increases the sense of urgency.
So it's essentially Scramble[スクランブル] but eminently better executed. I was always hopeless at Scramble[スクランブル] but very good at this. It must have been the shift in perspective that clicked for me. The bombing is achieved in a much more satisfactory way and the graphics are quite smooth for the time. The enemy discs glide through the sky and peal off in a graceful manner. There was a sequel to this game, but it wasn't much chop.
I have since played this game on PlayStation in one of the classics collection, but it doesn't seem to operate the same. As with all of the old arcade games, you really do need to experience Xevious on a cabinet rather than your TV.
