Sega's sequel to the first Wonder Boy where they turned it into an action RPG - Think Zelda, but 2D and jumping(actually that's just Zelda II...), but anyway it is a linear adventure with a time limit that drains your life away, so you have to act fast and beat 11 stages of ever more-powerful enemies that actually have great variety and and a nice difficulty curve. The best part is that as you get money to upgrade your items(sword, armor, feet, etc.), their power increases and so can you slice through the boss enemies with one or two strikes as they eventually appear as elite, regular mobs.
Some of the enemies in here are just way too tough and sudden though, and the respawn rate is absolutely crazy that it can feel like cheating. But if you can stand the torture of a time limit and constant enemy barage in some levels, this is a very fun game that offers a lot of payoff.

Kind of a strange quirk that respawning enemies can't drop money. Normally you'd think that would be to discourage grinding, but the whole game is on a time limit anyway. Maybe it's just a product of enforced arcade difficulty, but it seems like a weird bit of redundancy in an otherwise pretty tightly-designed game. Still fun, though.
