ULTRAKILL is a fast-paced ultraviolent old school FPS that fuses together classic shooters like Quake, modern shooters like Doom (2016) and character action games like Devil May Cry. Mankind has gone extinct and the only beings left on earth are machines fueled by blood. But now that blood is starting to run out on the surface... Machines are racing to the depths of Hell in search of more.
This game is absolutely incredible. Everything about it is either perfect or close to perfect - music, gameplay, lore, all of it.
The gameplay is so incredibly well-done; the movement is so fluid and fantastic to control that you feel like you are flying through the arena. The amount of depth the movement has is incredible. For example, slamming is a very simple mechanic on the surface, but using the momentum of the slam, you can increase the speed of your sliding and maintain that speed by slide jumping. If you wall jump and slam at the same time, you can also jump higher with each slam, making it possible to get insane amounts of height. You can use a technique called slam storage, which basically stores your slam so that the next time you jump, you'll go flying. This is very useful in the early stages of the cyber grind (an extra horde mode). You can also use slam storage to slide at super-sonic speeds. The amount of depth this one mechanic has is insane, and that goes for pretty much everything in the game. This game does something incredibly hard in game design - making every question the player has about the game a "yes" - such as "I wonder if I can ricochet a rail cannon shot with the coin".
The level design is also amazing. The levels in the prelude and the first layer of the game are designed to teach you each mechanic of the game. For example, "Into The Fire" is designed to teach you basic movement and shooting mechanics, "The Meatgrinder" teaches you about the terminal, hazards in the maps themselves, and secret missions, etc. And all the levels after are designed to put all of the knowledge you have learned to the test by creating environmental hazards, making complex arenas where you can easily fail if you make the wrong move, and long open areas for you to utilize your movement abilities to the fullest.
This game is just brilliantly designed and executed - a 10/10 masterpiece.

ULTRAKILL is a lovely combination between the movement mechanics of Quake, intense first-person-shooter style of doom, and the skill meter demon slaying of Devil May Cry all packed into a tight innovative package.
GAMEPLAY The core gameplay mechanics are masterfully designed with the controls being snappy and responsive. It's extremely enjoyable to master all of the movement mechanics. Repeating levels and gaining a deep understanding of them in order to get a perfect rank feels great. Learning how to use each weapon to its potential in tandem with one another is difficult and enjoyable. Getting better at the game until you can consistently max out the skill meter feels rewarding. Mostly however, slaughtering the demons littered throughout the world just feels good. it's the perfect level of challenge with tons of secrets throughout each part of the game and difficult boss fights to have fun with.
STORY The story is nothing special and in the grand scheme of the game is not too important. There is a bit of lore throughout the game that you can use to connect the things you do and what is going on which is a nice touch but this game doesn't need an elaborate emotional story to be good.
ART The low poly aesthetic is beautiful with extremely well made textures and interesting looking enemies and environments. All of the different sections of the game have their own unique style which encompass the feeling of that part of the game. Every single part of the game oozes style and shows how much care was put into shaping the world that surrounds you.
SOUND The music is intense and amazing. The sound effects are all extremely punchy and make every action feel rewarding. There are a plethora of different genres of music packed into this game, with most music made by the developer themself. All of it suits the game extremely well and has an energy level to keep you pounding away at enemies.
OVERALL There's so much to enjoy in this game. from captivating gameplay to interesting graphics, intriguing story and wonderful audio. in conclusion this game - even without being completed - is a modern masterpiece.

The game that Doom: Eternal wishes it could be. Impeccably tight combat and an engaging world that only ever hints at its depths. The only problem is that the game isn't finished yet.

Ultrakill is the most recent addition to "Games that I didn't actually expect to like this much", most describable as a brilliant marriage between Doom and Quake with a combo system; therefore the ULTIMATE BOOMER SHOOTER!!! Excitement from this childish glee aside I do actually want to discuss this game (and the rating I gave it) a little.
To start with, I want to address what I meant by saying its a marriage between Doom and Quake. Ultrakill has a high octane, blood pumping, adrenaline rushing movement system that if you can get the hang of can fling you around the arenas at a blistering speed that can be hard to follow at times between my desperation to clear the room and not accidentally kill myself cycling between the weapons. next would be the actual combat, and to put it in the simplest terms its a "Boomer Shooter" which in don't really know how to describe so think games like Dusk, Blood, Doom, etc. but unlike Doom the enemies don't (always) just line up to allow for the absolutely nastiest collateral kills.
And if I'm going to talk about the combat, in have to mention the arenas, guns, and bosses all in one shotgun section. The gunplay is TIGHT! Each gun and each guns mode fulfills a specific niche without ever becoming useless, and each gun feels absolutely incredible to shoot with punchy sound effects and great feedback. This is complemented by how well though out each arena is (aside from the few lightbox puzzles which slow the game down too much in my opinion) to the benefit of movement, enemy patterns, and the guns. Finally in this section would be the bosses. I am going to say nothing more than the phrase I would say most commonly during each fight, "SWEET FUCKING CHRIST!". The bosses are phenomenal set pieces and break up the stages.
The visuals and soundtrack of this game are incredibly solid through and through, and while the retro PS1-esque visuals are getting a little saturated in the current market I think it does enough with its style that makes it feel unique enough.
Ultrakill is one of the most phenomenal shooters I have played not just in the last decade, but in my entire life. This game feels like another natural evolution of the classic Doom franchise. The only reason I have it as a 9 currently is because only 3 stages have come out (YET!), and I am patiently excited for what is to come.

I will say though the bosses are pretty boring, they seem a little too spammy and repetitive. Not sure why indie devs think they need to overtune boss fights so much nowadays, the normal mechanics are just fine
part of me wants to play it just to see why an admittedly incomplete game is so well-regarded that it's in the top 40 here all-time. Other part of me would rather wait until it's done.
