It's really fun to see an old game age extremely well. While Super Mario Bros.[スーパーマリオブラザーズ] was important for laying the foundation, this is the true first game that made Super Mario[スーパーマリオ] such a beloved franchise. It has pretty much everything you could ask for. A wide array of power-ups that are quite fun to use. An overworld map that can be interacted with and has many fun features. A unique and well integrated theme for each of the eight worlds in the game. Excellent level design with appropriate difficulty, teaching you how to play among the earlier levels and challenging your skill among the later ones (they even made the autoscroller levels fun). A wealth of secrets you could find just by exploring the levels or messing around in the overworld. An excellent soundtrack and amazing sprite design. This game just has it all.
It is one of the most complete experiences not just on the NES but probably as a video game in general too and I highly recommend that everyone plays and completes this. It's excellent and one of the best video games of all time.

This is probably the hardest a 2d platformer can get without entering the realm of "unfair" which is a huge feat to pull off. 2 wasn't that hard but it had some cheap "gotcha!" moments, here it is just blatantly challenging by genius level design. 90% of the deaths can be prevented by taking it slow and plotting your next move, everything is telegraphed to give you juuuust a chance on the first go if you're paying attention. And it does indeed feel ahead of its time for the NES, it makes the first game look like random geometry. Sometimes I feel it gets a little TOO hard but idk if that's a real complaint lol
