A compilation of all the Super Mario Bros. games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, including the Japan-exclusive The Lost Levels, remade in 16-bit graphics.
I didn't grow up with the original NES games. I've heard complaints from those who did that the presentation just isn't the same and that the controls just aren't right. And I get it. But what I did grow up with is this compilation and each time I return to it I have a blast. I love these games.

Nowadays people groan when they hear gaming remakes, after all the market is oversaturated with them, FF VII is being remade, Resident Evil 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Crash Bandicoot just got remade, various Pokemon games have been remade over the past decade, but before remakes were really a big thing, this was the first remake of a classic game. The funny thing is that Super Mario Bros wasn't even 10 years old yet, the game was only 8 years old and Super Mario Bros 3 was only 5 years old when this was released. Hell, that would be the equivalent of Far Cry 3 or Borderlands 2 getting a remake from the ground up with modern graphics. Either way this is probably the definitive way to experience the first 3 games, the graphics and art style being the obvious reason. This plays exactly the same as the original games, same mechanics, same enemy placement and level design, same music, its basically just the first 3 games given a facelift with SNES graphics. It also contains Lost Levels which is really the true Mario Bros 2, and that's a cool little bonus. Not much to say, these games are all fun and aged fairly well except for Super Mario Bros 2. Sure they aren't as good or as lengthy as Super Mario World but 4 games in one and probably what were the best games of the late 80s, I'd say this is a pretty important artifact in gaming history and definitely improves on the originals.

After many years i finally got myself "Super Mario All-Stars", a collection that includes four different classic Super Mario 2d platform games in one cartridge. Anyone who played original versions in NES will definitely know there's going to be a huge amount of familiar and nostalgic moments in this compilation. In "Super Mario Bros." Mario and Luigi go through levels defeating Goombas, Koopa Troopas etc. to rescue Princess Toadstool from evil Bowser. There's also "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[スーパーマリオブラザーズ 2]" included which is in fact the original Japanese version of "Super Mario Bros. 2" but it is known from its higher difficulty. Western version of "Super Mario Bros. 2" is completely different due to the fact it was known as "Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic[夢工場 ドキドキパニック]" in Japan. Instead of jumping on enemies the method is to pluck vegetables from ground or lift other enemies and throw them to other enemies. Instead of just using Mario or Luigi, Toad and Peach are also playable with each one having their own abilities. Mario is a basic character, Luigi jumps higher, Toad runs faster and Peach levitates in air for a couple of seconds.
"Super Mario Bros. 3" was one of the best NES games when it was released. It improved Mario gameplay and managed to add more ideas that are norms in modern Mario games and other 2d and even 3d platformers.
"Super Mario All-Stars" is a great addition to everyone's SNES collection. Even though the collection is merely an "improved" version with a little amount of extra additions the collection is still a good collection to own. Plus, it's probably cheaper to buy this one rather than hunt down the original games. There's also "Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World" version available but it's rarer to find these days. If you do find it then i'd suggest to get that one instead.
Due to the legacy of "Super Mario Bros." and the Mario series "Super Mario All-Stars" contains many classic Mario songs conducted by the main Nintendo composer 近藤浩治 [Koji Kondo]. Maybe there's nothing new to tell about the music, but it sounds more 16-bit than its 8-bit versions and there's also new elements that take ideas from Caribbean music.

Agreed, I do like prefer the original aesthetic of the other two games though. Especially 2, I think some of the intended surrealness was lost in the upgraded visuals.
maybe it's just because i grew up watching a lot of flash animations using the all-stars sprites but i definitely prefer the visual stylings here over the nes versions, especially for smb1 and lost levels
