This was Atari's second release, after Pong. It pioneered a game design where the player crosses between horizontally moving objects. The most famous example of this is in Frogger (1981), but it would also be incorporated into several shooters in the late '70s.
Atari gets kudos for attempting an original game - most other coin-ops from the early '70s were Pong variants - but Space Race is not fun. The asteroids all move at the same constant speed and the gameplay quickly gets repetitive. The space theme feels forced (Apollo 11 still being a recent memory at the time), and there is no single-player mode.
Obviously, gamedevs were extremely limited in what they could do in 1973, and this concept needs more than what they had.
