On a technical front this game is amazing. The music, art design, animations and voice acting are top notch, like genuinely outstanding. However, the gameplay loop is even more monotonous and grindy than the first game to the point where I question why this sequel even needed to exist. If you loved the first game, it's sort of more of the same. If you didn't like the first game at all, I don't think this will change your mind.
It sucks because I love rougelikes and I love greek mythology, but like the first game, I just feel very "meh" about it.
I'm in a similar boat, though a bit more positive about the first game and more negative about the sequel.
At least with Hades 1 it would feel great when you get the right boons and are able to triple dash pushing every enemy away, reflecting projectiles, and clearing rooms in a few seconds. Here it feels like they took the fun out - my attacks feel like they don't do enough damage/enemy health pools are too big, seems harder to get broken builds, environments are more dull, NPCs are less memorable, weapons aren't as enjoyable to use. I didn't find Hades 1 particularly deep by roguelite standards, but at least I was having fun with it before it got repetitive.
I'll reserve my judgement until 1.0 comes out though. But for now I think I'll be putting the game down, hoping that it's in a better state next year.
The gameplay is just way more considerately designed. The poseidon dash build is replaced by the poseidon sprint, which is way stronger than the poseidon dash but it costs mana per hit so you can build around it more
I'm having fun with this, it is very much the same gameplay loop but I'm intrigued at how they tweaked it with the mana/magic system and the new weapons. I also liked how they tweaked some of the ways we obtained upgrades and stuff, a little more than Hades 1 for sure
Def think this is not a game to make snap judgments with. Hades has so much that it offers over time, and though i felt underwhelmed by this at first, I feel like i keep discovering major things i like about the game upon each new reveal. Big fan of the newer, expanded aspects of this for sure
So far combat feels very different from hades 1 just from the fact that the game doesn't let you spam dash making you play much slower (or I haven't unlocked it yet idk).
Makes the game harder and makes you actually think about positioning more while in hades 1 you could just turn your brain off and just spam dash out of everything.
They did it again. Idk how they improved on Hades in every way (on a technical/gameplay level). I'll reserve story related judgments til the full game drops.
