The first thing that stands out about this game is how lovely it looks. Of course, the animations are exemplary for the time, Disney animators actually worked with Virgin Games on this, but richly detailed backgrounds on the levels (especially the later levels) also make the game stand out. The other major thing that separates this version from the SNES version is that instead of doing a run-and-jump platformer, Virgin produced an action platformer. Aladdin has a sword now. The action is pretty simple and interestingly enough, even though Aladdin having a sword is a big part of the advertising for this game, you don’t actually use your sword in boss battles. All boss battles are fought using your apple projectile. This game is harder than the SNES one and unlike the SNES version there are no passwords, however you can buy extra lives and continues with gems you collect in the level. The lack of a password is not the only thing that makes this version more of a challenge. This game annoyingly loves to hide enemies behind columns and the platforming can be frustrating. There are sections when I should have landed on a platform and went right through it. The genie hands platforming section is the worst, there’s a section towards the end where you can’t really see the platform ahead of you and you’ve got to take several leaps of faith, just awful. Outside the graphics, it's average I feel.
