Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition

I first played this back in 2015, going into the game totally blind, and pretty much immediately fell in love with it; returning to it seven years later, armed with knowledge of where the franchise would go after this, I'm struck by just how perfectly formed it is. Truth be told, Danganronpa did not grow, expand, or change from here in any truly meaningful way until the very end of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony [ニュー ダンガンロンパV3 みんなのコロシアイ新学期] - everything that makes it so compelling and entertaining is already here. The sense of humour, the visual identity, the personality, the concept, the lore, the tone, the themes, everything was absolutely nailed on immediately. The confidence and clarity in the execution of these ideas is absolutely remarkable. The only thing stopping me from calling it perfect is that Danganronpa V3 is somehow even better, but even the way in which it's better (and, indeed, the way in which Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair [スーパーダンガンロンパ2 さよなら絶望学園] is worse) is instructive; all the main game does is refine and gently extend the content here, because there is no need to add anything new to the mix. By my reckoning, the number of media franchises that have ever been as fully and completely realised from their opening seconds as this is can be counted on one hand.
