Is it fair to complain about a free game being too long? Probably, but it feels weird, doesn't it?
Just as I came to the end of the 'The Cave' section here, which I managed to get through in a single sitting without getting bored, I was ready to praise this as the best Cube Escape game yet; it does all the things this series always does well, but it's the first time I haven't had to reach for a walkthrough for a solution, and the new hint system, which points you in the right direction without ever completely giving away the solution or the logic behind it, is a welcome addition that's handled just right. And then just as I'm ready to put it away and mentally commend Rusty Lake for another great game, a second section of the game opens up, set inside a submarine- and despite a couple of nice individual puzzles, it's as laboured as this series has ever been, to the point where I found myself reaching for those walkthroughs once again just to speed things along.
They would have been much better off releasing the cave section on its own and holding back the submarine section for the next installment, giving themselves time to refine it and tighten up the pace. Given that the cave section on its own is slightly longer than some other entries in the series, literally nobody would have complained. As it is, this has the feel of a greatest hits album with a bunch of B-sides tacked onto the end.
