On February 25, 1968, CIA operative Alex Mason awakes in an interrogation room. He is forced to recall certain moments in combat in order to locate a numbers station, which is bound to transmit broadcasts to Soviet sleeper agents who will use chemical weapons across the United States.
This was a classic, stupid fun. Great level designs from the Cold War, the beginning of the cooler side of the pillow in COD.

It’s crazy to me that this game is rated as it is (currently, a 3.44). What’s even more offensive is the current reviews lack a full summary. I am certainly biased; I grew up with some of MW1 and 2, and played more BO1 and 2. But most people who have currently reviewed here seem to have either only played Zombies, or only played the Story mode. At some level, this is fair. It’s valid to prefer those over Multiplayer. However, I think the Multiplayer is awesome and deserves recognition. This game is so underrated on this site, incredibly so. In fact, I’m going to take it a step further: this is the greatest COD that has ever been created.
Sure, it is possible that if I played more MW1 and 2, especially Multiplayer, I’d feel more strongly about them. I played some of it, but never really got into them outside of the Story. I tried Multiplayer on and off, but never loved it. Could’ve just been me still honing my FPS skills or just being indifferent to the actual Multiplayer. It’s hard to say. But I don’t want to make it seem like I hate them, because I definitely don’t. I remember playing hours and hours of the sniper stealth level in MW1 all the freaking time. Has super memorable stuff and better than MW2 imo. I wonder if part of it is just people having the whole MW vs BO beef, if that’s a thing.
Anyway, on to the main deal.
THE STORY
If you haven’t played the story, I’m going to spoil it and other games from that era because they are all over 10 year games at this point, so whatever.
The story is hyper American war cheese action with a pretty reused story motif: you are actually the person you were looking for all a long. They were in your head! Many early shooters, like Shadows Over Chernobyl, did similar stuff. But the story is still oddly very memorable and fun in its levels, pacing, and overall character development. I mean, it’s hard to ask a lot from any COD game in terms of story. But after playing stuff like MW1, 2, and BO1, the bar is significantly raised. I played the story a ton out of all three of those games. But as much as I like the story of MW1 a lot, I think I like BO1 more. It doesn’t have as memorable characters as Ghost and Price I guess, but outside of Price the characters don’t have much going for them. This is true of BO1 as well, but the narrative I think is pretty strong.
Another person on this site likes to view this as a psychological thriller, in the backdrop of an alternate American Cold War satire. I think that’s completely right. The ending with everyone on the boat just screams ridiculous American fantasy, but at the same time we get the solemnly told numbers by a speaker who Mason starts repeating. The game definitely screams propaganda, but that’s the point. That’s literally the point. How can you hate on it for the propaganda while juggling how it deals with brainwashing and psychological abuse? It’s honestly surprising for a COD game the more and more I think about it. It makes for a much more interesting game outside of the mere “America wins” cliché.
So basically, is it a top tier story like other highly rated games on this site? Absolutely not. Games like Fallout, Halo, Half-life put any COD game to shame, and many more that I could probably list. But is it top tier as a fun campy action American blockbuster-esque cheese zinger, with a great psychological thriller twist that the likes of Christopher Nolan would be proud of? Honestly, hell yeah.
THE MULTIPLAYER
Bar none, the most fun I’ve ever had playing a COD game. Nuke town, Summit, Havana, WMD, Hanoi, Launch, freaking Firing Range. Every map is absolutely crazy and timeless on this thing. The mechanics and gun play is super fun, many fun and memorable weapons like the Python, Cross Bow, the tactical Throwing Axe, on and on and on. Prestige did not feel nearly as grindy as it does today, and unlocking guns/camo was more linear and reasonable rather than cumbersome and tedious. Sure, that means on a grind you can unlock almost everything pretty quickly, but you stick around because the maps and gameplay is wonderful.
ZOMBIES
While Zombies was introduced in World at War, it was not until this game that Zombies became not only enthralling and dense, but also charming and incredibly rememberable. Playing with four people as either JFK or Castro, with their witty one liners and fun quotables they say as you play, just really adds to the game. The other maps, mystery boxes, etc etc, oh my goodness. Even people who don’t love this game can’t help but talk about how fun Zombies in BO1 is. It’s intoxicatingly wonderful. It would go on to be added to in BO2, but I think the charm of 1 is hard to match and defeat.
CONCLUSION
This is the best COD game no cap. Maybe I’m full of shit for not playing the other games as much (particularly there Multiplayer), but I don’t care. I hope that I’ve at least given a good defense of the thing from it being somewhat okay, decent COD game. It definitely has some flaws, but it’s I think a very timeless game. BO2 is a great sequel, but it misses a lot of the awesome charm, fantastic levels, and great gameplay of 1. Later BO titles have not been able to replicate that of 1, and for good reason. It’s a masterpiece of its class. One for the ages.

A psychological thriller inside of an insane Western Cold War fantasy
First of all, zombies was the "battle royale"-type trend of this era and it was a fucking plague. Every fucking AAA-game tried to get in on it and do their "take" on it. If I wanted to play a zombie game, I would fucking buy one. I can't believe people are rating this game based on it. I will not factor zombies into any of my ratings.
From what I can remember the campaign was the absolute highlight of this game. They really dialed it up on this one. Most things paid off, some things are quite laughable. It's a bit different than previous games. It really is alternate history on crack (insane US propaganda fantasy) but most importantly, it plays more like a psychological thriller. I have to try and look past the insanity that is the western propaganda in this game and try to view it as some sort of satire.
All in all, it's an exciting personal story in an interesting era.
I recall even less about the multiplayer but the little I do remember it was pretty good, acctually. One of the better experiences in the entire COD series but I think the maps were a bit meh in the long run.

Anyone else play the Wii version, got made fun of in school for it back in the day but in retrospect it's a kinda sick version even if it's missing dlc maps/other zombies maps/flamethrowers in multiplayer/looks like shit
I think im about halfway trough and so far its just a bunch of missions to make America look amazing slapped together with a horribly done conspiracy story. The whole aesthetic with the flashing and the numbers and stuff would be unoriginal but at least cool if it wasn't only cutscenes because outside of that this is one of the ugliest games i've ever played.
