Horde shooter

Horde shooter games focus on eliminating large quantities of enemies while advancing through levels or surviving their oncoming waves. The games put a heavy emphasis on team play in order to survive, typically featuring co-op with other players, which may be substituted with AI-controlled characters. The levels tend to be linear and incorporate objectives to complete before the players can progress, but some titles rely on surviving through waves of enemies. Aside from enemy hordes they may also involve combat with special opponents possessing abilities which require using different tactics.

Left 4 Dead tends to be considered the genre’s progenitor, and influenced games such as Killing Floor and Vermintide which follow many of its gameplay tropes.
